Greece wildfire largest ever recorded in the EU and showing no sign of slowing down
Greece wildfire largest ever recorded in the EU and showing no sign of slowing down
A wildfire near the northeastern Greek region of Evros which has been raging for 11 days is unlikely to be brought under control, officials have said. Deputy governor Dimitris Petrovich told national broadcaster ERT wind could cause the flames to spread even further. “Unfortunately, we see that the Dadia front cannot be contained and brought under control,” he said, describing the conditions for firefighters as “difficult”. The European Commission said the blaze, which is raging near the city of Alexandroupolis, is the largest single fire in the history of the EU. Over 400 firefighters, six planes and four helicopters were working to put out the blaze in Evros, the fire department said. Evacuation orders have been issued for a village in Evros and another village in neighbouring Rodopi. The wildfire has been blamed for 20 of the 21 wildfire-related deaths in Greece last week. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, which has scorched more than 80,000 hectares (197,000 acres) of land, including in Dadia national park, according to the European Union’s Copernicus Emergency Management Service. Major wildfires have also been seen on the outskirts of the capital Athens and on the Aegean island of Andros. Some 260 firefighters, one plane and three helicopters tackled the blaze on the outskirts of Athens, which burned into the Mount Parnitha national park. Meanwhile, a third fire broke out on Saturday on the island of Andros in the Cyclades archipelago, which is suspected to have been caused by a lightning strike. Greece suffers major wildfires every year and imposes wildfire prevention regulations, typically from the start of May to the end of October, limiting activities such as the burning of dried vegetation and the use of outdoor barbecues. By Friday, fire department officials had arrested 163 people on fire-related charges since the start of the fire prevention season, government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said, including 118 for negligence and 24 for deliberate arson. The police had made a further 18 arrests, he said. Last month, thousands of people were evacuated from towns and villages across Greece after wildfires ravaged the country. Fires spread through Corfu, Rhodes, Evia, Crete and the northern Peloponnese region in Greece. The most serious fire in the country was on the island of Rhodes, where some 19,000 people had been evacuated from several locations. Local police said 16,000 people were evacuated by land and 3,000 by sea from 12 villages and several hotels. The region’s deputy mayor said the fires in Corfu were caused by arson. Chelsea’s Academy stars can rise to Carabao Cup challenge – Mauricio Pochettino
Chelsea’s Academy stars can rise to Carabao Cup challenge – Mauricio Pochettino
Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino is confident the club’s Academy stars can rise to the challenge when handed a chance to impress in Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup tie against AFC Wimbledon. Pochettino is set to fully utilise all the options at his disposal for the visit of the Sky Bet League Two side, looking to manage the workload on a squad which is already depleted by injury. Forward Mason Burstow, midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu and Noni Madueke have all come off the bench in the Premier League this season so could be handed a start, while Diego Moreira and defender Bashir Humphreys may also be involved. Whatever side he selects, Pochettino has no doubt the talented teenagers will have what it takes to make the step up. “We are thinking to start with 11 players that can perform in the way that we want,” Pochettino told a press conference. “(We want to be) right in our assessment, in our risk because you have many injuries and the squad is not big at the moment. “We are going to use four or five young guys from the academy – 17 years old, 16 years old – but Chelsea has always produced good talent, young kids and now is a good opportunity. “It is not because it is our philosophy at the moment, it is because we need to bring young guys to the first team because we have some players that cannot play tomorrow. “But I think it should be good to create the possibility for the young guys to be part of the project, part of producing players for the first team because the Academy and the coaches there are working so hard. “For a club like Chelsea, it is always good to have players from the Academy that can translate the identity of the club.” Pochettino refused to be drawn on continued transfer speculation, with defender Marc Cucurella reportedly subject of interest from Manchester United. “I cannot talk about supposition or rumours. For tomorrow he (Cucurella) is going to be able to play,” the Chelsea boss said. “The club did not communicate (anything else) to me. All of the players that are in our squad are in our plans even if they didn’t play at the moment.” With Chelsea not involved in European football this season, Pochettino intends to focus on just one thing – winning matches, whatever the competition. “I want to win the Carabao Cup, I want to win the FA Cup and I want to win the Premier League, then we will see what happens after,” the former Tottenham boss said. “Even if we are involved in the next few years in the Champions League or different European competitions – every single one is going to be a challenge for us and an opportunity to win.” Chelsea, who beat Luton on Friday night for a first Premier League win of the new season, have agreed a season-long loan deal with Roma for Romelu Lukaku. The Blues have already spent around £350million on new arrivals during the transfer window and have been linked with bringing in at least one more attacking player – with Arsenal’s Emile Smith Rowe reportedly on the radar. Pochettino said: “I know very well that the club is working very hard to try and finish our business with still a few days, so I think that will happen, maybe yes (another player). “At the moment, we are working to try and deliver what we want, but there is nothing to communicate at the moment.” Pochettino added: “If we had someone who can maybe improve different positions, of course they are welcome, but I am happy with how we are now.” Read More Charity boss speaks out over ‘traumatic’ encounter with royal aide Ukraine war’s heaviest fight rages in east - follow live British athletes and staff left stranded in Budapest after World Championships US Open day one: Djokovic and Swiatek ease through as Brit Lily Miyazaki shines On this day in 2007: Sir Andrew Strauss resigns as England Test captain

Adele stops show to defend fan who was told off by security guard
Adele stops show to defend fan who was told off by security guard
Adele stopped in the middle of her performance to defend a fan who appeared to be getting a telling off from security. During her 'Weekends With Adele' Las Vegas residency show at Caesars Palace on Saturday night (25 August), the singer abruptly paused her performance of 2015 song 'Water Under the Bridge,' when noticed the commotion around fan Juan P. Lastra. "Look behind you, everybody's upset," the security guard told Lastra, who was standing up and filming himself with a selfie stick. To which Lastra's pal beside them asked: "We can sing though, right?" It was by this point, the conversation caught the attention of Adele herself as she stopped singing and asked: "What is going on there with that young fan who’s been bothered so much since I came on for standing up?" @juanp_lastra Adele thank you so much for this breathtaking night and for standing up for me, so that I could live your concert as it should be. I’m also sorry that I didnt respond back to anyrhing you asked me. you started talking to me and I literally stopped breathing. I had been planning to come to this concert for over a year and I finally had the opportunity to come see most beautiful glorious woman this earth has gotten. I still can not wrap my head around the fact that I was in the same room as ADELE, sang every song with her, and she even stopped the show to defend me. I did not expected everyone in my section to be mad at me for having the time of my life and wanting to stand up and sing with her but I honestly did not care at all about what anyone was saying to me I just was in awe with the master piece I was watching with my own eyes. I did not have time for them haters. @Adele Access #adele #weekendswithadele #lasvegas #ceasarspalace?? “What’s going on with him? Yes, you, with your hand up, yes you!” "Why are you all bothering him?” Adele once again. “Can you leave him alone, please? They won’t bother you anymore, darling. You enjoy the show. Leave him alone.” Another security guard then came over to Lastra and reassured him: "You don't have to sit down, you're fine," and told the other two security guards: "It's all done" and signalled for them to leave. "Sorry, guys. He’s been bothered the whole show by security and other people sitting behind him. He’s here to have fun. All of you are here to have fun," Adele added. “Let’s start again,” she then said as she began to sing 'Water Under the Bridge' once again from the top. Since then, clips of the moment have been going viral on social media, including the video from Lastra himself who recorded what happened from his selfie stick. Posting to TikTok, he said: "Adele thank you so much for this breathtaking night and for standing up for me so that I could live your concert as it should be." "I’m also sorry that I didn't respond back to anything you asked me. you started talking to me and I literally stopped breathing." Lastra noted how he had been planning to attend this Adele show for over a year and "did not expect everyone in my section to be mad at me for having the time of my life and wanting to stand up and sing with her." He added that he "honestly did not care at all about what anyone was saying to me," and "did not have time for them haters" instead he was just "in awe" of Adele's performance. Many people have also sent messages of support to Lastra and said they too would have been standing up to sing and dance at the show. One person said: "CAUSE WHY ARE THEY ALL SITTING DOWN??? I would stand up too and vibe with adele" "I saw the other POV first and this legit made my cry!! Shows are meant for SINGING, STANDING AND DANCING!! GO OFF KING," another person wrote. A third person added: "I’m so happy you didn’t let those people bring you down and adele stood up for you." "Why do people come to concerts to sit and be boring!?!? I will never understand!! Sing your heart out king!" a fourth person commented. Someone else replied: "I like how once Adele started talkin the security guard DIPPED. Like no no. Tell her what you were sayin." It's not the first time an artist has defended a fan from security during a live performance, Taylor Swift previously went viral after she told security to stop bothering fans while she performed 'Bad Blood' on her Eras Tour.
