UFC 291 card: Poirier vs Gaethje and all fights this weekend
UFC 291 card: Poirier vs Gaethje and all fights this weekend
This weekend, Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje will go head to head in a rematch five years in the making, as they headline UFC 291. When the lightweights clashed in 2018, Poirier stopped his fellow American to win an entertaining bout, and the pair are expected to produce more fireworks this weekend, as they fight to crown a new ‘BMF’ champion. The ‘baddest motherf*****’ title was first – and last – seen in 2019, when the now-retired Jorge Masvidal beat Nate Diaz to become the inaugural champion. Masvidal’s teammmate Poirier will now look to claim that vacant belt in this rematch with Gaethje, who is a former interim lightweight champion like his rival. In the co-main event this weekend, former light-heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz welcomes Alex Pereira to the division, in the latter’s first fight since losing the middleweight belt in April. Elsewhere, there are plenty of exciting match-ups on the card. Here’s all you need to know. When is it? UFC 291 takes place at the Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Saturday 29 July. The early prelims are set to begin at 11.30pm on Saturday (3.30pm PT, 5.30pm CT, 6.30pm ET), with the regular prelims following at 1am BST on Sunday 30 July (5pm PT, 7pm CT, 8pm ET on Saturday). The main card is then due to begin at 3am BST on Sunday (7pm PT, 9pm CT, 10pm ET on Saturday). How can I watch it? The card will air live on BT Sport in the UK, with the broadcaster’s app and website also streaming the fights. In the US, ESPN+ will stream the action live, as will the UFC’s Fight Pass. Odds Poirier – 10/13; Gaethje – 11/10 Blachowicz – 10/11; Pereira – 10/11 Full odds via Betway. Oppenheimer’s grandson claims there’s a ‘serious’ historical error with the film
Oppenheimer’s grandson claims there’s a ‘serious’ historical error with the film
Despite an impressive Rotten Tomatoes rating of 94 per cent and floods of gushing reviews, it seems Oppenheimer may contain a historical error. The real-life grandson of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist and the 'godfather of the atomic bomb', has spoken out about a "serious accusation" in the film towards his grandfather. Oppenheimer filmmaker Christopher Nolan based the script on the book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. It went on to win a Pulitzer Prize. Charles Oppenheimer acknowledged that he found himself "accepting and liking" the film, but called one detail inaccurate. "The part I like the least is this poison apple reference, which was a problem in American Prometheus," he told TIME. "If you read American Prometheus carefully enough, the authors say, 'We don't really know if it happened.'" He was referring to the scene at the start, in which Oppenheimer (played by Cillian Murphy) leaves a poisoned apple out and a visiting scientist nearly bites into it. "There's no record of him trying to kill somebody," he told the publication. "That's a really serious accusation and it's historical revision. There's not a single enemy or friend of Robert Oppenheimer who heard that during his life and considered it to be true." In fact, Barbie and Oppenheimer performed so well at cinemas this weekend (21 July) across the UK that Vue International said they sold the most amount of tickets since the pandemic. Tim Richards, chief executive and founder of Vue International, said: “Vue saw its highest weekend admissions since Avengers: Endgame in 2019 with the release of Barbie and Oppenheimer, proving that when the movies are there our customers will come to watch them on the big screen. “Barbie is tracking to become the biggest film of 2023 and has a good chance of getting into the Top 10 highest-grossing films of all time. “It is an incredibly exciting moment for the industry, and we expect this trend to continue for the coming weeks.” Have your say in our news democracy. F1 Academy announces radical team change for 2024 season
F1 Academy announces radical team change for 2024 season
All 10 Formula 1 teams will have one driver competing in F1 Academy next year as part of a radical overhaul in the setup of the all-female racing series. The Academy, formed at the back end of last year with Susie Wolff as managing director, is currently in the midst of its first full season, culminating at the United States Grand Prix in October. Now, after an announcement earlier this year that all F1 Academy races would be held on F1 race weekends next year, there has been a further shake-up. The team currently has five teams – ART Grand Prix, Campos Racing, MP Motorsport, PREMA Racing and Rodin Carlin – but next year, all 10 F1 teams will nominate a driver and will have their livery on that car meaning the likes of Mercedes, Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren will all be involved in the competition. The full driver line-up will be announced at a later date, with the remaining five drivers supported by other partners. “This landmark moment not only demonstrates the depth of support for F1 Academy from across the F1 community but will inspire a whole generation of young girls to realise the opportunities both on and off track in motorsport,” said Wolff. “As we join the F1 calendar for next year and host F1 Academy Discover Your Drive events in the lead up to our races, I am confident that we will have a positive impact across our sport in the long term.” F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali added: “We created F1 Academy to bring about real and lasting change to ensure young female talent have the right system in place to follow and achieve their dreams. “Today is a very important moment as it shows the impact the project is having and the support it is receiving from across the F1 community. “Susie, the teams, and everyone involved are working tirelessly to ensure we go from strength to strength and continue to deliver on the important objective we have set out together. “In 2024 the F1 Academy will join our race calendar, raising the awareness and profile of the series globally and to have the F1 liveries on the grid will be something very special.” Spanish driver Marta Garcia leads the 2023 standings with a 36-point lead with six races to go.
