Manchester City ready to walk away as Wolves dig in over Matheus Nunes transfer fee
Manchester City will walk away from a deal for Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes if they do not believe it offers value for money. The Premier League champions have turned to the Portugal international after ending their interest in West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta, who faces an uncertain future as the FA investigate potential breaches of betting regulations. City have reportedly had a £47m offer for Nunes rejected with Wolves apparently believing the 24-year-old is worth considerably more than that. But City have a history of abandoning their attempts to sign players – from Harry Maguire to Declan Rice – when they felt the price exceeded their valuation and are willing to do so again if they cannot agree a suitable amount with Wolves. However, Pep Guardiola described Nunes as “one of the best players in the world” after City faced Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League in 2022. Wolves paid £38m for Nunes last summer but he has had an underwhelming spell at Molineux, scoring one goal in 40 games and being needlessly sent off in Saturday’s 4-1 defeat to Brighton. However, the summer departures of the long-serving pair of Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho meant he was shaping up as key player for Wolves this season. City’s search for midfield reinforcements was given added urgency when Kevin De Bruyne was ruled out for four months with a serious hamstring injury. They have signed Mateo Kovacic and defender Josko Gvardiol this summer while Rennes winger Jeremy Doku should become their third addition. Spurs face transfer talks deadlock over £40m Brennan Johnson move
Tottenham Hotspur are still some way off agreeing a fee for Brennan Johnson, as Nottingham Forest are completely unmoving from £40m basic price for the forward. The stand-off could yet see Chelsea in late on, as they retain an interest in the 22-year-old. With a lot of the major clubs still looking at attacking signings in terms of wide players and No.9s, Johnson is seen as a player whose versatility and pace up front are of huge value and Ange Postecoglou is hugely keen. Personal terms will not be a problem and Johnson is willing to go to Spurs, but negotiations between the London club and Forest are understood to have been hugely frustrating. Chelsea are nowhere near so advanced, and haven't got to that stage, as they survey potential attackers. The club are prioritising an out-and-out centre-forward but there are not too many obvious choices available, and there is a belief in the market they will move for Johnson late on in the window if his future is not yet agreed. It is therefore a deal that could go to the very last hours of the window. Across the summer regarding the striker options at each club, Spurs sold Harry Kane to Bayern Munich while Chelsea are still looking to offload Romelu Lukaku. Forest signed Chris Wood on a permanent deal from Newcastle, having had him on loan last season. Mary Earps' fashion line completely sells out following Nike row
Mary Earps has already been hailed a national treasure for her performance during the Women’s World Cup – and now, the goalkeeper has completely sold out her very own fashion line. The brand MAE27 was launched back in June when Earps brought her "little idea to life," with a string of motivational t-shirts. "I’ve wanted to do this for such a long time, but never took the plunge because I didn’t have a scooby where to start — I still don’t but I’ve gone for it anyway so here it is, minimalistic & unapologetically itself, MAE27," she told her 627,000 Instagram followers. It didn't take long for fans to flood the announcement with comments, with many placing orders and completely selling it out. "Love this," one person wrote. "My daughter is so excited about this!" Another added, "Buzzing got my order in," while a third commented: "Well done. Need to get my girl this – she adores you." It comes after Earps, a self-proclaimed "TikTok Queen", hit back at Nike for snubbing her request to sell a replica of her goalkeeper shirt. Nike addressed the criticism in a statement over the weekend, saying it was working on "solutions for future tournaments" but not going as far as apologising. A Nike spokesperson said: "Nike is committed to women's football and we're excited by the passion around this year's tournament and the incredible win by the Lionesses to make it into the final. "We are proudly offering the best of Nike innovation and services to our federation partners and hundreds of athletes. We hear and understand the desire for a retail version of a goalkeeper jersey and we are working towards solutions for future tournaments, in partnership with Fifa and the federations. "The fact that there's a conversation on this topic is testament to the continued passion and energy around the women's game and we believe that's encouraging." In response, Earps took to her Instagram Stories writing: "@Nike is this your version of an apology/taking accountability/a powerful statement of intent?" The 30-year-old also shared a link to a petition calling for Nike to make the kit available and support female keepers around the world. At the time of writing, the petition has raised more than 150,000 signatures. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Toni Kroos lashes out at Liverpool target's 'embarrassing' Saudi league move
Toni Kroos has lashed out at Al-Ahli's move to bring Celta Vigo's Gabri Veiga from La Liga to Saudi Arabia. Al-Ahli have reached a £30 million agreement to sign the midfielder who was linked with moves to both Liverpool and Napoli earlier this summer after blowing away the Spanish league last season. In a response to a Fabrizio Romano transfer tweet announcing the incoming move, Real Madrid's Kroos decided to label the move as 'embarrassing', heaping more criticism on stars who are opting for the alternative riches of the Saudi Pro League instead of the usual expectation of trading between European club-after-club. Al-Ahli have been hefty 'antagonists' in the transfer war between European teams and Saudi Arabia clubs, signing handfuls of players in eyebrow-raising from top-flight teams. Veiga will join Edouard Mendy, Franck Kessie, Riyad Mahrez, Allan Saint-Maximin and former Liverpool man Roberto Firmino. Other stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, N-Golo Kante, Jordan Henderson and Neymar have also joined big-spending clubs in the region. It's clear what Kroos thinks of the young midfielder joining them at 21 years of age. As for Veiga, he'll enjoy a meteoric upgrade in lifestyle after scoring 11 goals in 28 games. The transfer window will draw to a close for European teams shortly, but there will be an entire month for Saudi sides packed by the state's Public Investment Fund to pinch top talent - and there will certainly be more criticism heading their way for that.
