Arsenal set to welcome Beth Mead back from injury in clash with Aston Villa
Beth Mead looks likely to make her long-awaited return to Arsenal’s matchday squad when the Gunners host Aston Villa at the Emirates on Sunday, boss Jonas Eidevall confirmed. The England forward, who won the Golden Boot in the Lionesses’ Euro 2022 triumph, has not played for club or country since rupturing her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) late last November. Mead faces one final training session before her fitness for Arsenal’s third meeting of the new Women’s Super League season is confirmed, but the 28-year-old’s manager was feeling optimistic after seeing her put through her paces on Friday morning. Eidevall said: “In order to, for squad selection, we have one more training to go. If she goes through that training she should be 100 per cent ready for squad selection. “She has a lovely energy, she plays the game with both her right and left foot with really good attacking qualities too. We all know that Beth Mead is a quality football player, so of course we are really looking forward to having her back on the pitch again.” Mead, whose injury ruled her out of this summer’s World Cup, was one of four of Eidevall’s players to sustain an ACL problem last season, drawing further attention to what many feel is a crisis facing women’s football, where the issue is alarmingly common. Netherlands striker Vivianne Miedema joined the ‘ACL club’ a month after her team-mate and partner Mead but is also edging close to a comeback, said Eidevall, while Leah Williamson, who captained England to the European trophy, will not feature until after Christmas at the earliest. Defender Laura Wienroither ruptured her ACL in May, while fellow defender Teyah Goldie became the fifth victim when she suffered the same issue in August. Eidevall said: “Viv has returned to team training, which is really nice, so obviously the next thing from team training is to start playing in games, if that’s friendly games or internal games behind closed doors and so on. “That’s the next step, and from there on obviously you’re not miles away from being able to be selected to be in the squad, so she’s definitely getting close.” While the unfortunate quintuplet of team-mates have been able to support each other through the long recovery process, Eidevall and his staff do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. He added: “Unfortunately we have a group of players that went through the same thing. I think, though, at the end of the day you need to deal with your things yourself, because even if it looks on paper that you have the same injury, it’s never exactly the same. “There are always differences. There can be similarities and yes you can help, but at the end of the day everything is going to be unique to you as an individual. I try to be very mindful of treating people with similar injuries like a package.” Read More Dan Biggar determined Wales career will not end after Argentina quarter-final It’s the right time: Ex-England captain Sir Alastair Cook announces retirement Talking points as Ireland look to break World Cup curse against All Blacks Rabbi on FA faith group resigns over governing body’s response to Hamas attacks ‘Doing it for Johnny’ adds to Ireland’s Rugby World Cup motivation Warren Gatland: It would be ‘huge achievement’ if Wales can reach semi-finals

Nasa’s Psyche mission set to launch to ancient metal asteroid today: Live updates
Nasa is about to set off to a distant, metal asteroid that could tell us how planets form. On Friday, the spacecraft – currently folded in the cargo bay of a SpaceX rocket – will leave from the Kennedy Space Centre and begin a mission that will see it arrive at what is thought to be an ancient remnant of a protoplanet in 2029. Propelled by a system of solar-electric ion thrusters being used for the first time on an interplanetary mission, the spacecraft - about the size of a small van - is expected to reach its target on the outer fringes of the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter nearly six years from now. It would then orbit Psyche for 26 months, scanning the asteroid with instruments built to measure the asteroid’s gravity, magnetic proprieties and composition. Psyche measures roughly 173 miles (279 km) across at its widest point. The leading hypothesis for this asteroid’s origin is that Psyche is the once-molten, long-frozen inner hulk of a baby planet torn apart by collisions with other celestial bodies at the dawn of the solar system. It orbits the sun about three times farther than Earth, even at its closest to our planet.

Dillon Danis claims Logan Paul fight is off and he’ll be facing Jake Paul instead
Dillon Danis has claimed his hotly-anticipated fight with Logan Paul is cancelled and that he'll be fighting Paul's brother, Jake, instead. The MMA fighter accused his Youtuber/boxer opponent of breaking the rules surrounding their weigh-in ahead of their boxing match in Manchester on Saturday, which they are competing in alongside Tommy Fury and KSI, in a series of posts on Twitter/X. But Paul denied the claims and replied with a video of him on the scales coming in at 194.3lbs. Danis didn't back down. "He claims he made weight, but it doesn't count," he said. "The rules are the rules." "If he wants to be viewed as a genuine boxer, he needs to follow the 11 o'clock deadline. Look at the time he posted. It's not fair; I had to follow the rules, and he isn't an exception." He continued in another post: "The commission's rules state that weigh-ins are between 10 and 11. If you miss the 11 o'clock deadline, you've missed weight. I weighed in at 10:15, but Logan still hasn't. "The commission said that if he doesn't arrive by the 11am deadline, the fight is off. He missed the weight, but then called misfits and changed the rules to give himself an extra hour. "We should be on an even playing field, he shouldn't get special treatment. He’s already got more juice than Tropicana. He missed the weight, plain and simple. They’re trying to handicap me as much as possible.' Then he said he was fighting the other Paul brother instead but whether that ends up being more trash talk to psyche out his opponent or a reality remains to be seen. However, the Mirror reports that Paul did indeed make weight on time, which would disprove Danis’s claims. What a palava. ‘Moronic’ podcast take has infuriated football fans everywhere
Podcasters can be known for their controversial takes, but one football pod has angered footy fans everywhere with their opinion on supporting a team. The clip that has gone viral is from the Half A Yard TV podcast hosted by Hass, Omz and Omar where the trio discussed whether a football fan can only support one team or whether they can support multiple ones in different leagues. It came after Omar initially questioned why Queens Park Rangers fans support their team. "This might be controversial but I don't think you can proper[ly] be into football and like only support that team," co-host Hass said. "You gotta have like a Premier League [team], someone that you enjoy in the Prem something like that." He said "I can't be an Accrington Stanley fan," referring to the League Two side. While one of the co-hosts Omz appeared to disagree, the third co-host Omar explained why they sided with Hass's take. "It's facts because abroad that's what happens, they have their normal team but then they support a Real Madrid or Barcelona." To counter, Omz noted how he's a Manchester United fan and "would still be" in the hypothetical scenario that the team got regulated to the Championship. The pair conceded this point, though Omar noted Man Utd's "history," with Omz disagreeing that the history of the team isn't a factor in whether you would continue to support them if they were regulated into a lower league. Hass also mentioned how QPR have previously been in the Premier League. "You could never write off these teams - remember Leicester when they won the league," Omz added. This conversation has since been viewed over 8.1m times on Twitter/X, and has provoked a lot of reaction - and it's fair to say many football fans disagree with the idea of supporting more than one team for each league. Here are some of the angry responses: In response to the backlash, the podcast's Twitter account tweeted: "I guess this take was controversial… " with the awkward monkey side eye puppet meme.
