Kevin Keegan has a serious issue with 'lady' pundits like Jill Scott working on men's football
Former England manager Kevin Keegan says he has a “problem” with female footballers being employed as pundits for England men’s games. Keegan is a former England footballer who scored 21 goals in 63 appearances and also managed the national side for a period of just over a year and a half in 1999 and 2000. The former sportsman is currently on a speaking tour across the country, and in an appearance in Bristol during “An Evening With Kevin Keegan OBE”, he made the controversial comments. On female footballers doing punditry for men’s games, Keegan said: “I’m not as keen, I’ve got to be honest, and it may not be a view shared. I don’t like to listen to ladies talking about the England men’s team at the match because I don’t think it’s the same experience. I have a problem with that.” He continued: “The presenters we have now, some of the girls are so good, they are better than the guys. It’s a great time for the ladies. But if I see an England lady footballer saying about England against Scotland at Wembley and she’s saying, ‘If I would have been in that position I would have done this,’ I don’t think it’s quite the same. I don’t think it crosses over that much.” In recent years, former England Lionesses players Jill Scott, Alex Scott and Karen Carney have had a greater presence in football punditry across the women’s and men’s games. Recently, Jill Scott swapped social media platforms with fellow pundit Gary Neville, where the level of sexist abuse levelled against her was laid bare. Later in his talk, Keegan explained that he had experience with the women’s game and spoke about where women’s football is at right now. “It is a great time for the ladies’ game,” Keegan said. “When I was England manager I went to coach the England ladies and I had this perception of what the quality would be like and they were so much better than I thought they were going to be. “I joined in and then I thought, ‘I’m getting out of this.’ I couldn’t get the bloody ball and one of them nutmegged me, that finished me off.” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Is this viral Rishi Sunak picture photoshopped?
A photo of Rishi Sunak is causing confusion on social media as people claimed it appears to have been altered. The image, posted by the prime minister to promote his new plans to limit smoking, shows Sunak hanging out with some teenagers who are wearing American school jumpers. This led to accusations in a now-deleted tweet that Sunak did not actually meet the children pictured, and simply edited himself in a stock image of teens. While it looks a little odd, it appears there is a normal explanation for the photo. It was taken when the PM visited Truro and Penwith College in Cornwall in February this year. It just so happened the students he was pictured with had Americanophile tendencies and so donned college sweaters. Journalist Robert Peston clarified the situation and shared a link to the original photo which was shared by the Conservative Party at the time. Peston wrote: “Turns out this is not a photoshop boo-boo by Downing St social media team. But just bad luck. “See here for the original photo of the PM with a British lad who happens to be wearing a Kentucky sweatshirt… A modern Thick of It episode!” And the Conservative Party also confirmed that it is indeed legit, to indy100. So that's that, folks. Nothing to see here on this occasion. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Alan Shearer leads tributes after Newcastle’s Champions League demolition job
Record goalscorer Alan Shearer led the tributes to Newcastle’s latest European generation after witnessing their Champions League demolition of Paris St Germain. The former Magpies skipper, who scored 206 goals during a glittering 10-year stay with his hometown club, was in the crowd at St James’ Park on Wednesday evening as they took the French champions apart to go top of Group F. Shearer, the last man to score for the Magpies in the competition in 2003 before Miguel Almiron set them on their way against PSG, said on X, formerly known as Twitter: “As days and nights go that’s a f——— Belta. Hangover coming!!! What a performance man.” Former team-mate Rob Lee was slightly more measured, posting “What an atmosphere!! What a result”, while Shay Given, who played alongside Shearer against Barcelona in the final game of Newcastle’s last Champions League campaign in March 2003, added: “Did that really happen?? WOW what a night.” Bristol Rovers manager Joey Barton, who spent four years with the Magpies, made an astute half-time prediction on X when he wrote: “PSG are playing uphill 2nd half. (Metaphorically and proverbially). @NUFC downhill to the Gallowgate. The Toon might give these a right pumping here, especially if these front players for PSG don’t track back.” Former England captain and TV pundit Gary Lineker tweeted during the game, “What a performance this is from @NUFC”, while Jamie Carragher and Micah Richards shared in defender Dan Burn’s delight after the final whistle, joining him in a celebratory dance. Carragher wrote: “What a night #NEWPSG. Only way to celebrate is to have a drink or a dance. Big Dan has got the moves.” Burn, who scored the Magpies’ second goal, was singled out for praise by another presenter, Jake Humphrey, who highlighted the defender’s journey in football. He posted on X: “2013: League One with Yeovil 2023: Champions League with Newcastle. What a story. What a night.” Newcastle’s players were also quick to take to social media as they celebrated a famous night for the club. Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes said on Instagram: “One night to remember forever! Very proud of the team! We have the best fans in the world! We keep going. Unbelievable performance for everyone.” Fabian Schar, whose late strike wrapped up the win, said on X, “No words for that night”, while Sean Longstaff, scorer of the third, said: “A night we’ll never forget! Champions League football is back at St. James’ Park.” Kieran Trippier and his defensive colleagues did a sterling job to keep Kylian Mbappe at bay, much to the disappointment of his son Jacob, a huge fan of the France superstar, although his consolation was to receive the frontman’s shirt. Trippier posted a photograph of the youngster wearing the shirt on Instagram accompanied by the caption, “Good morning”. Pep Guardiola hailed Rico Lewis as one of the best players he has ever coached after his starring role in Manchester City’s hard-fought win at RB Leipzig. The 18-year-old produced a commanding display as the holders maintained the winning start to their Champions League defence with a 3-1 victory at the Red Bull Arena on Wednesday.
