Dozens of people were dramatically rescued from choppy seas in the Mediterranean as they clung to a rocky reef on Sunday 6 August, after suspected migrant boats launched by smugglers from northern Africa shipwrecked in rough waters. Survivors said some 30 fellow passengers were missing from capsized vessels, and the Italian Coast Guard confirmed that a woman and a child on board one of the boats lost their lives. In a particularly risky operation, two helicopters battled strong winds to pluck people to safety, one by one, after they were stranded for nearly two days on a steep, rocky reef off the tiny Lampedusa island.

Point-of-view footage shows the moment a camera operator had to run for cover during what a Russian official said was Ukrainian shelling on Russian-controlled Donetsk in eastern Ukraine on Saturday, 5 August. The camera was following firefighters as they approached a university building in the city, which was burning after what Russian-installed mayor Alexei Kulemzin called a Ukrainian attack. Moments later, a loud blast is heard and the camera operator runs away whilst crouching down. Kulemzin said initial reports indicated the cause of the fire was an attack by Ukrainian forces using cluster munitions - this has not been independently verified.

Donald Trump’s former White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham has spoken out about Melania Trump’s absence during her husband’s three arraignments. Speaking on CNN, Grisham said Melania’s absence shows she is “too busy” to attend court with her husband and that it is “his issue”. Grisham said: “She is saying in her mind that this is his issue, he can deal with it. He doesn’t need me there to prop him up, I am too busy to go with him. That is who she is. She will show up by his side when wants to and when she is perfectly ready.”

Donald Trump claimed his arraignment in Washington DC was a “persecution” shortly after leaving court, telling reporters “this is a very sad day for America”. “When you look at what is happening, this is a persecution of a political opponent, this was never supposed to happen in America,” the former president said, speaking from the steps of his private plane. He then went on to claim that he has a “substantial” lead in both the Republican primary and against Joe Biden. “This is the persecution of the person that is leading by very, very substantial numbers in the Republican primary and leading Biden by a lot.
