Meghan Markle looks set for another Netflix record with new movie adaptation
Meghan Markle could be set to have another huge Netflix hit on her hands as her and Prince Harry look to adapt the best-selling rom-com novel Meet Me at the Lake for the streaming service. Carley Fortune, the author of the book confirmed the news that Netflix and Meghan and Harry's production company Archewall would be working on the forthcoming film. On Instagram, she wrote: "I never thought I'd be making this announcement, but since I am, it feels fitting that I'm doing it from the cottage where it all began." Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter "I'm thrilled to confirm that I'm teaming up with Netflix and Archewall productions on the adaptation of Meet Me at the Lake," she continued. "Will and Fern's love story is dear to my heart, and I can't imagine a more perfect partnership. Writing this book was a tremendous personal challenge, and to see it recognized in this way is truly incredible." The book focuses on the relationship between central characters Will and Fern who meet in their 30s and features similar instances to what have befell Harry and Meghan in their lives childhoods, including the death of a parent in a car crash and postpartum struggles. Once the film arrives on the platform it could set another Netflix record for the Royal couple. The story is set in Toronto which is where Meghan was filming the drama Suits when she first met Harry in 2016. Suits also ties into Meghan's relationship with Netflix as the legal show recently set an unprecedented record on the platform after it was made available in the United States. Even though the show ended four years ago it is now the most streamed acquired show in Netflix history having racked up 3.1 billion minutes in just a week. Meghan played the paralegal Rachel Zane in the show but left in 2017 following her engagement to Harry. In addition, the couple's Harry and Meghan documentary which was released in December 2022 is the most streamed documentary in Netflix history which was watched for 81.55 million hours within its first week. GOP senator amplifies conspiracy theory that Covid was ‘pre-planned’ by ‘elite’ in anti-vaccine rant on Fox
GOP senator amplifies conspiracy theory that Covid was ‘pre-planned’ by ‘elite’ in anti-vaccine rant on Fox
Republican Senator Ron Johnson amplified a number of Covid-19 conspiracy theories in a Fox Business Network segment bloated with false claims about the disease amid a growing number of hospitalisations and infections. While public health officials are urging Americans to stay up to date with vaccinations, the Wisconsin senator and Fox personality Maria Bartiromo falsely refuted vaccine efficacy and safety while wrongly stating that ivermectin is an approved treatment. The senator also revived baseless conspiracy theories circulated by anti-vaccine influencers like Robert F Kennedy Jr, who has faced ongoing scrutiny for his bogus suggestion that the virus is a biological weapon used to target certain demographics and spare Jewish and Chinese people. “This was all pre-planned by an elite group of people,” Mr Johnson said on the network on 11 August. “We’re up against a very powerful group of people … We are going down a very dangerous path, but it’s a path that is being laid out and planned by an elite group of people that want to take total control over our lives, and that’s what they’re doing bit by bit.” Mr Johnson and Ms Bartiromo also falsely claimed that the US Food and Drug Administration has approved ivermectin to treat Covid-19. Their bogus claims follow a recent appeals court hearing in a lawsuit from three doctors who have accused the federal agency of overstepping its authority by telling people not to take the drug. A federal judge appointed by Donald Trump dismissed the lawsuit last year. FDA attorneys argued that the agency did not prohibit doctors from prescribing the drug but had issued guidance recommending against its use. Right-wing media falsely interpreted those statements to mean that the agency now is endorsing the drug. Ms Bartiromo also admitted to taking ivermectin – which still is not authorised or approved for use in preventing or treating Covid-19 – before falsely stating that the FDA says it’s “fine” to use. “It was hard to find my doctor to finally, you know, address this and prescribe ivermectin,” she said. “He did, my Covid was gone in a day when I took ivermectin. And now three years later, the FDA says, ‘Oh, yeah, that’s fine. Take ivermectin.’” The FDA has not said that. The segment aired as Covid-related hospitalisations begin to surge across the US, increasing 12.5 per cent over the last week to more than 9,000, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. EG.5, an offshoot of the omicron variant that sparked waves of new infections, has been circulating in the US since April, now accounting for more than 17 per cent of Covid infections, according to the CDC. Last month, Mr Kennedy – a prominent anti-vaccine conspiracy theorist who is seeking an extremely long-shot bid for the Democratic nomination for president – revived an antisemitic conspiracy that blames Jewish people for the emergence of the disease. He baselessly stated during a press event that “there is an argument to be made” that the disease is “ethnically targeted”. The Independent has requested comment from Fox and a spokesperson for Mr Johnson. Reggie Gray, the man with the folding chair from Alabama brawl, pictured after handing himself in
Since footage of the wild Alabama brawl swept social media, the 'folded chair' has become the centre of attention. And now, the man who handled the famed chair Reggie Gray has handed himself in after police urged him to “contact local law enforcement,” as “there’s more interviews to conduct with him.” Gray is now being held in Municipal Jail with local police chief describing the 42-year-old as the man "wielding that folding chair." For those unaware, a fight broke out on August 5 near Montgomery Riverfront Park, after two white men started arguing with a Black dock worker. Things soon escalated before more people jumped in to seemingly defend the man. Four people have since been arrested, and "there’s a possibility more will follow after the review of additional video," the police told The Independent. People were thrown into the water and a folded chair was hit over someone's head. The footage prompted X users (formerly known as Twitter) to do what they do best: Memeify it, with the 'inventor' of the folding chair being the centre of memes across social media. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Reggie Gray, hailed The Chair Warrior online by many, was been asked to contact the police department for questioning after 21-year-old Mary Todd, Richard Roberts, 48, Zachery Shipman, 25, and Allen Todd all handing themselves in following the mass brawl. After police asked Gray to come forward the responses soon came rolling in, with one writing: "Reggie Gray needs our support & hopefully a GoFundMe gets started for good representation." Another urged people to "leave the chair man alone." The Montgomery Police Department said they "acted swiftly to detain several reckless individuals for attacking a man who was doing his job," and that "Warrants have been signed and justice will be served." Reed continued: "This was an unfortunate incident which never should have occurred. As our police department investigates these intolerable actions, we should not become desensitized to violence of any kind in our community. Those who choose violent actions will be held accountable by our criminal justice system." Have your say in our news democracy.
