Man lies about having cancer to raise $30,000 to enter poker competition
A man has admitted to lying about terminal cancer to raise money to enter a poker tournament. The Las Vegas World Series of Poker tournament is said to cost around $10,000, with the highest buy-in event at a staggering $250,000 for the Super High Roller. Rob Mercer from California was so desperate to take part that he set up a GoFundMe page for his fake "stage 4 colon cancer". In total, he swindled people out of thousands, which he later admitted it to the Las Vegas Review Journal. "I did lie about having colon cancer. I don’t have colon cancer. I used that to cover my situation," he said. "What I did was wrong. I shouldn’t have told people I have colon cancer. I did that just as a spur-of-the-moment thing when someone asked me what kind of cancer I had." He continued: "I’m sorry for not being honest about what my situation was. If I would have done that from day one, who knows what would have happened." A spokesperson for the crowdfunding website told the outlet that donators will be getting full refunds. "GoFundMe has zero tolerance for the misuse of our platform and takes swift action against those who exploit the generosity of our community," they said. "We have removed this fundraiser for violating our terms of service, all donors have been fully refunded, and Rob Mercer has been banned from using the platform for any future fundraisers. Additionally, GoFundMe cooperates with law enforcement investigations of those formally accused of wrongdoing." Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Watch the trailer for Blink 182 member Tom DeLonge's UFO conspiracy film
Blink-182’s Tom DeLonge has long been a vocal believer in aliens, government cover-ups around UFOs and the paranormal. Now, he has directed a feature film which deals with subject, and which gives a not-so-subtle nod to his own worldview of extraterrestrial life. The film, Monsters of California, centres around a group of high school misfits in America, who discover research left behind by a missing government agent. They embark on a “dangerous adventure to uncover a paranormal conspiracy in Southern California that brings them face-to-face with some of the government's most guarded mysteries”. It comes as UFO hysteria hit fever pitch this year, with multiple high-profile investigations into reports of potential alien activity by the US government. The first was a US Congressional hearing into unidentified anomalous phenomena which took place over the summer. The second was a NASA report into the subject, which culminated in a press conference last week, where the agency’s boss Bill Nelson admitted that he believed there were aliens somewhere in the universe. DeLonge said: "The film takes my fascination with the unexplained, combines it with the skate culture I grew up a part of, and tosses in my ridiculous sense of humour that millions got to witness during my Blink-182 days. “In recent years, I’ve had the good fortune of helping the government remember how much they care about UFOs through the work we do at To The Stars, and it's that experience which helped inspire this movie. I can't wait for audiences to see the f****d up fun adventure these kids go on.” DeLonge’s film is set for a 6 October release. Woman claims men ghost her because she is a 36-year-old virgin
Comedian Sonali Chandra has opened up about her struggles dating as a 36-year-old virgin. Chandra explained how she was brought up in a conservative household, which taught her that sex is for marriage. But now, 36 years on, her family are encouraging her to "do it already" after claims of being ghosted by men because of it. Speaking to Truly TV, she said: "The first time I ever told a guy that I'm still a virgin was when I was 26. The guy who was my first kiss, my first actual relationship, he was shocked. His jaw dropped and he asked if I was gonna be a virgin for eternity." Chandra, who said she has only ever kissed five men in her life, went on to share that the men who "ghosted" her put her through "emotional hell." "It's heart-wrenching and makes me think that guys only think I'm good for sex," she said. "I have decided to save myself for my special man because I believe that sex – which I don’t call sex, by the way; I call it making love – it's a very special and sacred act," she said. "And I can’t just give my body to any man." She continued: "It’s hard to date as a virgin, but on the flip side, I don’t have to worry about a UTI, an STD or an accidental pregnancy, so I’m protected!"
