Barbie fans think the new movie references another famous doll brand
Everyone is excited for the release of the highly anticipated Barbie movie, and fans believe the latest trailer actually references another popular doll. In the new trailer, we see Margot Robbie's Barbie and Ryan Gosling's Ken go on a big adventure from Barbie Land to the real world where they encounter normal humans. The words "If you hate Barbie" appear on screen, as Barbie can then be seen interacting with four teenage girls in the next clip, with one of them informing her: "We haven't played with Barbie since we were like five years old." Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter To which Barbie looks disappointed at this revelation as she awkwardly says "Oh..." Now, viewers are convinced the four girls represent another doll brand - but there's a debate as to exactly which one. Some believe the girls look just like, Sasha, Yasmin, Cloe and Jade - aka the Bratz dolls which are widely seen as Barbie's market rivals. The two doll brands (Mattel's Barbie and Bratz's MGA Entertainment) were previously in a legal battle with each other which resulted in Mattel being ordered to pay MGA Entertainment nearly $310m in damages, fees and other costs back in 2011, as per The Independent. While others believe it is an Easter Egg reference relating to a different doll from the Mattel family - the My Scene dolls which consisted of Chelsea, Maddison, Kennedy and Nolee (Barbie was previously part of this line until around 2006 before being replaced by Kennedy). My Scene dolls were introduced in 2002, in a bid to compete with Bratz dolls and were discontinued worldwide in 2011. Elsewhere, viewers of the trailer also believe there was a nod to Barbie's inventor Ruth Handler and 'Barbie Girl' is in the Barbie movie after all but its not the original song. Barbie directed by Greta Gerwig is set to be release in cinemas on Friday 21 July. Have your say in our news democracy. 'Barbie Girl' is in the Margot Robbie movie after all but its not the original song
As well as a new trailer, Barbie fans found out on Thursday which musical icons would feature on the soundtrack for the highly-anticipated film. The star-studded cast, featuring Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrell and more, will have alongside it a star-studded soundtrack. It was revealed by Rolling Stone on Thursday that the soundtrack will include artists such as Charli XCX, Dominic Fike, Dua Lipa (who’s also appearing in the film), Fifty Fifty, Haim, Ice Spice, Khalid, Lizzo, Nicki Minaj, PinkPantheress, and more. But what really had fans excited was the announcement Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice, and Aqua are collaborating to release a new version of Aqua’s well-known 90s song ‘Barbie Girl.’ Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter This collaboration comes as a surprise as Ulrich Møller-Jørgensen, manager of Aqua singer Lene Nystrøm, told Variety in 2022 that the iconic song would ‘not be used in the movie.’ Fans seemed to love the announcement: The collaboration won’t be the first between Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice, who last month released the song ‘Princess Diana’ together. The soundtrack will be released the same day as the film, July 21st. Have your say in our news democracy. Barbie fans emotional at small detail in new trailer
With the release of another Barbie movie trailer, fans are getting excited - and couldn't help but notice something they believe to be a heartfelt detail to the doll's origins. In the new preview, viewers got to see more of what Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s Barbie and Ken get up to when they end up in the real world, far from their home in Barbie Land. But there is a brief moment near the end of the trailer that has everyone talking. It features Barbie sitting on a park bench and sharing a smile with a mystery woman sat next to her. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter In this scene, the voiceover said: “Humans only have one ending. Ideas are forever.” Viewers who watched the trailer with subtitles noticed how the quote is attributed to a character named Ruth. So, many believe that the mystery woman is actually meant to represent the inventor of the iconic doll, Ruth Handler who passed away back in 2002. Handler created Barbie back in 1959 and with her husband Elliot Handler. She was the co-founder of Mattel toys which in turn Barbie became one of the most recognisable dolls ever. Fans quickly took to Twitter to share this presumption - although this has not been confirmed and some have noted Rhea Perlman is part of the cast but her role has not be revealed yet although some believe the voiceover did sound like her. Meanwhile, the lineup for the movie soundtrack was also announced with music from Dua Lipa, Lizzo, Charli XCX, and even Ken himself as Ryan Gosling being list. In addition Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice have made a new version of AQUA's “Barbie Girl,” which can be briefly heard in the trailer. Barbie directed by Greta Gerwig is set to be release in cinemas on Friday 21 July. Have your say in our news democracy. Arnold Schwarzenegger has stark warning for steroid users
Arnold Schwarzenegger has delivered a stark warning for anyone thinking of using steroids. The actor and former bodybuilder reflected on his history with drug use and pointed out the dangers of taking the banned substance. Speaking in an interview with Men’s Health, the 75-year-old said that he used to take both testosterone and dianabol, a popular steroid drug. “One hundred milligrams a week,” he said about his testosterone usage. “And then three dianabol a day, so that was 15 milligrams a day.” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter He also clarified that taking steroids weren’t illegal until 1990, when Congress passed The Anabolic Steroid Control Act, and things were different then to how they are today. “Bodybuilding always, always was considered a safe sport. But now it’s not. Now people are dying—they’re dying because of overdoses of drugs and they don’t know what the f*** they’re doing,” Schwarzenegger said. “They’re listening to charlatans. If I want to get medical advice from a doctor, I go to UCLA or I go to the Cleveland Clinic.” Warning against using steroids, he added: “Don’t go there. Yes, we are at a time now where we always look for the easy way to make money, the fast way to get rich, the easy way to be an influencer." “Anytime you abuse the body, you’re going to regret it. So I just want young people to know that I have seen people getting kidney transplants and suffering tremendously from it.” He also said that he understands if bodybuilders don’t want to take his advice. “I recognise the fact that, who am I to say this? This is the guy who climbed without a rope,” he added. Have your say in our news democracy. Click the upvote icon at the top of the page to help raise this article through the indy100 rankings.

New horror movies inspired by Peter Pan, Winnie the Pooh and Cinderella are being made
More horror films that parody our favourite childhood characters are on their way. The childhood tales of Winnie the Pooh, Peter Pan (Red Shadow Studios) and Cinderella (ChampDog Films) are getting a terrifying transformation as a result of the stories being part of the public domain. It comes after the controversial Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey movie that was panned by critics but was commercially successful. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Now, two new parody horror films are underway that spoof everyone's favourite golden bear and the boy who never grew up, Variety reported. And if the titles are anything to go by - Winnie the Pooh: Death House and Peter Pan Goes to Hell - they're certainly not suited to younger audiences... First up, we're getting another Pooh-based horror with Winnie the Pooh: Death House which has been described as The Strangers meets The Purge. It will be directed by S.J. Evans (Dead of the Nite), the film's storyline involves "an unexpected school reunion in a remote country mansion – an event orchestrated by members of a cult who were mercilessly tormented by the guests as children. Now, years later, they’re out for gruesome revenge." "The script is supremely clever with scope for iconic visuals, and we have assembled a terrific young cast loaded with star potential. I’m very excited to share this dark and disturbing horror with the world," Evans said. Meanwhile, Peter Pan Goes to Hell, written by Adam Stephen Kelly and directed by Phil Claydon is said to be in the vain of horrors such as Psycho and Nightmares in a Damaged Brain. Although, there is not much information about the plot Claydon did provide some insight and shared his excitement for the film "I grew up on a healthy diet of low-budget horror from the masters like Sam Raimi, Wes Craven and Peter Jackson," he said. "In recent streamer times, opportunities to create high-concept horror on a small budget had vanished so I relished the opportunity to dive on board with Red Shadow Studios in carving out an environment for filmmakers to come and craft some grassroots scares. Let the mayhem commence." "The huge interest in horror movies based on public domain properties piqued my interest as it did many, but with Red Shadow Studios – in partnership with Dolphin Medien – I’m trying to bring together really talented filmmakers and high-caliber actors as I firmly believe that, in this space, budget doesn’t have to mean compromising on talent or creativity," Kelly added, describing the two films as "absolutely ‘out there’ gonzo takes on beloved children’s stories." Along with this, Cinderella is set to have a 'horror-fication' with the film Cinderella’s Curse being for sale at AFM and ITN Studios are set to the film in October 2023, according to Bloody Disgusting. The film is set to be produced and directed by Louisa Warren and written by Harry Boxley and the cast includes Kelly Rian Sanson, Chrissie Wunna and Danielle Scott. “This an incredibly unique spin on the Cinderella we all love and know. There are going to be some truly horrific deaths by her hands," Warren to the publication “I think the gore hounds are in for a treat in my dark retelling.” Elsewhere, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 is set to start filming this Autumn, Collider reported. Taylor Swift fans are selling rainwater collected during stormy concert
It’s well known that Taylor Swift has one of the most dedicated fan bases in music, and now one of them is trying to cash in by selling rainwater collected during one of her recent shows. Swift took to the stage in bad weather during her show in Foxborough, Massachusettes on Saturday (May 20). The singer braved the elements to serenade her fans and now one of them is looking to make a little cash after collecting some of the rainwater. Instagram account Only In Boston posted an image of an item selling for $250 (£250). Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter The picture shows containers with the words “Taylor Swift rain” and “Gillette stadium” written on them. The question is – is anyone fanatical enough to buy it? It’s not the first time a Swifty has tried to make some quick cash after a concert recently. Last week, people discovered a listing on Depop which listed a pair of contact lenses for a (literally) eye-watering $10,000. The post described the lenses as “contacts that have seen taylor swift eras tour [sic]” – but did eventually take down the listing and clarify it was a joke. It’s impressive just how far fans will go for Swift, though. A devoted dad recently decided to fork out over $21,000 (£16,000) for his daughter and her friends to go to a Taylor Swift concert after their tickets never arrived from StubHub.
