6 times reality TV went too far
Reality TV shows are a breeding ground for controversy – especially in their infancy. Many of the snippets – and some series that went on to get cancelled for obvious reasons – have been left in the past where they belong. That said, now and again we get a subtle reminder that they did actually exist, thanks to social media. From cooking up controversy on I'm a Celebrity to a notorious moment on Joe Rogan's Fear Factor, here are six moments that simply went too far: Naked Attraction: Man gets too excited and escorted off the show The unhinged Channel 4 show once saw one man escorted off stage for getting aroused. Speaking on the Andy Jay Podcast, host Anna Richardson recalled an episode a few seasons back with a young man who was "getting a little bit excited about what was about to happen". She added: "Our lovely floor manager, Dave the floor manager, had to go 'come on' and just had to escort him off the floor for a little while, just to calm down. And then he was brought back onto set. "It all happens. Boys being boys - you can't control your anatomy, can you? So, there's been a little bit of excitement." Gino D'Acampo cooks a wild rat for dinner on I'm A Celeb Gino D’Acampo may have won series nine of I’m a Celebrity, but he certainly stirred up a storm along the way. The lack of food in camp prompted the celebrity chef to get creative, making a rat risotto with one he stumbled across in the jungle. Chief Inspector David Oshannessy, of the New South Wales RSPCA, said at the time: “The allegation is that an animal was cruelly treated on the set." He continued: "It was a rat that was killed. There is a code of conduct in New South Wales that dictates how animals can be used. The killing of a rat for a performance is not acceptable." ITV were later fined for the incident. I'm a Celebrity... 2009 - The Rat Eating Incident www.youtube.com The entire Fat Families series In recent months, attention has turned to the brutal weight loss reality show, thanks to TikTok – and many can't believe it made it on TV. Even host Steve Miller acknowledged it would not sail in 2023. In one clip re-shared online, Miller responded: "I loved presenting this show. It helped so many. But like Little Britain, I doubt it would ever be recommissioned." He added: "I think there's more chance of Santa coming down the chimney than it being recommissioned. Comedy is sadly dying!" The Sky1 show lasted two seasons before production stopped at the end of 2010. @something_about_nicky UK TV at its finest… ? #uk #uktv #tv The first and final episode of Who's Your Daddy? The 2005 American show was cancelled after one single episode – for very obvious reasons. For a chance to win $100,000, contestants who were adopted had to guess who their real dad was out of a lineup of 25 men. If they chose the wrong man, the biological dad got the money. At the time, a spokesperson told Variety: "It's the most emotional show we've ever put on the air... I guarantee you: if you have any heart, you'll be bawling at the end of the show." ...Or not. Who's Your Daddy Promo [2004] www.youtube.com Tyra Banks dumps 'sick' America's Next Top Model contestant in the most brutal way It was the show that had every teen girl in a chokehold over a course of 24 seasons – yet, no one truly realised how toxic it actually was at the time. Every few months, a snippet from the show crops up on social media, with people likening it to Squid Games hosted by the "sadistic" former model. One clip sees the models waiting to find out who will be eliminated. Addressing one contestant Joslyn Pennywell, Banks said: "You have such a beautiful strength, and for someone to get up and be so sick, and still to perform? That’s a survivor." Pennywell had notably been violently sick while at the CoverGirl commercial task. As she turned the card to reveal the photo, Banks plainly said: "And Joslyn, you’ll be able to survive this." It was then revealed that she had been eliminated. Pennywell broke down in tears, believing that she had been saved. Drinking donkey semen on Fear Factor Way before Joe Rogan was podcaster Joe Rogan, he was the host of Fear Factor, a stunt show that saw participants across the world battle it out for a cash prize. One scene showed twins Claire and Brynne chugging 30 and 24 ounces of donkey urine and semen, with Claire detailing it tasted bitter "with hints of hay." The NBC show was eventually cancelled in 2006. Fear Factor Moments | Donkey Juice www.youtube.com Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. IShowSpeed confronts his father for viral ‘IShowMeat’ video
IShowSpeed has hit out at his dad after he sang about his “IShowMeat” wardrobe malfunction. The 18-year-old appeared on a TikTok Live stream, where he saw the video of his father singing about the incident. The YouTuber was live streaming to 24,000 fans when he inadvertently revealed his privates. Since then, footage of his dad saying about the viral hashtag “IShowMeat” has been widely circulated online – and given that his son has opened up about the impact the incident had taken on his mental health, it’s not surprising that he wasn’t impressed. IShowSpeed, real name Darren Jason Watkins Jr, decided to call up his father after seeing the clip and confront him on his behaviour. Speaking on the livestream, IShowSpeed said: “I'm calling my dad, there's no way! Chat, is this actually real, bro? Like, dead*ss, is this real, is this f***ing real? 'Cus I am about to dead*ss call my dad right now! I swear to god wallahi, I'm not trolling bro." He then questioned his father about the song he’d been filmed singing, which went: "I show the meat, to make you feel complete.” His father denied that he had been mocking his son with the song, and instead claiming that he’d been trying to take the heat off him. “I wasn't calling you that, I was calling myself that,” he said. “They're clipping out the wrong part, I was saying that 'I am...' I was trying to take the heat off you. I am looking out for you man." It comes after IShowSpeed returned to streaming and addressed the incident, saying: The streamer has since returned to the platform and addressed the "embarrassing moment," and how it's impacted him mentally. "These past days and hours, I've been suffering very mentally, genuinely," he told viewers. "At the end of the day, I'm still a human being." Mum reduced to tears as paralysed son is taken to a brothel
A mother was reduced to happy tears after detailing her son's first experience at a brothel, thanks to a famed influencer. In a viral clip posted to TikTok, Willem Powerfish (@powerfish_real) took a paralysed man named Jake, his mother Gail, his carer Banish and his best friend Kyle on Jake's first fishing trip in 12 years. Willem asked Gail about Jake's romantic relationships since his tragic car accident that left him losing all control over his body other than his mouth and and movement of his thumbs. He went on to suggest that they should take him to the brothel, telling Jake: "You can decide if you like the woman or not. If you don't like it, you don't have to do it." A snippet shows Jake being taken into the establishment, with Willem giving a thumbs up to the camera. Following Jake's experience with a sex worker, his mother said: "She said she did a few things, he got very erect so she got on top and he did the whole thing." "Unreal," she added. @powerfish_real #fyp #powerfish Speaking to the camera, Gail said: "I hope it gets through to some people that even though we have brain injuries or impairments, we still have needs." Many support workers flocked to the clip to thank the influencer, with one writing: "As a support worker of quite a few young people both female and male in all seriousness, this is so so important for so many reasons." Another added: "As a support worker, this is needed. It’s the thing people don’t talk about." "Legend status has been achieved by the Powerfish once again," a third penned. Professional mistress makes £69k-a-month by bossing men around
A professional mistress and dominatrix has revealed why high-flying men pay her thousands of pounds to boss them around – claiming it helps them heal from childhood issues including bullying. Mistress Cleopatra, 32, makes £69,000 (€80,000 EUR) per month on OnlyFans after entering the dominatrix scene. Visits to her ‘dungeon’ include submitting to any orders Cleopatra demands of them and being “dominated” while living out fantasies. While the role appeals to her “control freak” nature, the star insists it has one key benefit to her clients, many of whom are businessmen with personal traumas from the past. “They like to be humiliated [because] a lot of these men were bullied at school,” Cleopatra, who has 249,000 followers on Instagram (@mistresscleopatra_) and Twitter, told NudePR.com. “They were nerdy and got so much bullying that it’s a part of them. “They want me to humiliate them, even physically sometimes, too. “It’s like they can’t let go of that part [of their past]. “They like me to laugh at them and bully them – they just have that desire to feel that again. “It’s emotional, but it’s also a sort of release for them. “During the session, they just completely change. “At school, kids are really hard on each other and some guys cannot let that go. “When they got older, they have power or become the CEO or director of a company, and they feel like they have lost some of their identity. “When they come for a session, they want that back – that little boy inside of them. “You humiliate them, then reward them. “They pay a lot of money for it. “Then at the end of the session, we talk about their desires and why they like it. “The guys are great fun once they've released their tension during the session. “They're like a person re-born after I'm done with them. “They usually end up talking to me about their lives and personal situations and it's nice to be able to lend a listening ear to them. “We have a drink, have a laugh, we talk about what to do next time and we go our separate ways.” Cleopatra likened the experience to the feeling after a tough workout at the gym and said she feels her clients are reclaiming the power from their past traumas. Interestingly, many of the men she works with are high-flying members of society. She added: “It relaxes them to know that I’ve got control over them and they don’t have to think. “It’s more psychological than sexual. “If you look deep down inside yourself, everyone has a desire they cannot talk about because it seems taboo.” Cleopatra, who has lived in Amsterdam since leaving Egypt in 1998, says the sessions don’t weigh on her and that she can separate her work from her personal life. She said: “I do enjoy it because it is a part of me, but I don’t believe that being a dominatrix is for everyone. “You have to have a strong mindset to stay in your role. “I am a very sensitive and empathetic person in real life, but I’m good at separating it.” While there is a community of dominatrixes, Cleopatra prefers to operate solo. She said: “You do get jealousies with other doms who try to push you down, and they don’t like you to take their subs. “Sometimes guys go to different doms, and they’ll be really nasty [about it]. “A few years ago, another dom was extremely jealous… but I see it as a positive that they are worried about me. “There’s a bit of jealousy and drama working with other dominatrixes, so I’ve worked myself out of the crowd and have thrived ever since. “I am willing to work harder and do everything – whatever I can in my power to be more successful – so I take it as inspiration. “I’m just focused on myself and my business.” Cleopatra has also started coaching other prospective dominatrixes and OnlyFans creators. She added: “I am very hardworking and I like to help others. “I have seven or eight clients and manage them all – they don’t know anything about being a dom or an OnlyFans model…you have to actually do a lot of things for them, coach them and have weekly meetings and calls. “It’s a lot of work. “People have no idea how much research I do or how hard I work. “I invest in other businesses too, which people don’t expect from me. “And of course [doing this job] I also get to spend a lot of time with my family and spend money on them too – because the bit of my own luckiness and money that I make, I like to share with my loved ones. “People expect me to be very outgoing and a crazy girl who likes to go out, but I like to stay at home all the time. “I love to be with myself, I’m introverted. “My work and my home lives are very different – it’s nice to have that balance.” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Is the September 1st general strike on TikTok real?
Avid TikTokers may have recently found themselves in a rabbit hole about a so-called strike expected to happen on 1 September – but what is it all about? In recent clips taking over the platform, many Americans have suggested going on a "General Strike" against a range of economic struggles including overpriced rent, working conditions and grocery costs. One of the original TikTok clips came from user @queenpettylex, who vented her frustrations about the current climate and the US government. She went on to suggest a strike could be the answer – and her clip blew up. "Don't nobody show up to damn work," she yelled. "They can't fire everybody. Stop paying these damn bills, we can't afford to pay the motherf***ers anyway, so why the f*** are we paying them? "The people need to wake up and realise we've got the power in our hands," she continued. "We'll shut this s*** down." The TikToker later followed up with a clip encouraging so-called participants to stand outside news stations across the nation and sing in solidarity. The comments were flooded with thousands of fellow TikTokers seemingly on board, with one writing: "Damn right!!!! Let’s f***ing strike… the rich elites will starve without we the people!" Another wrote: "Reminds me of the scene from A Bugs Life… where the grasshoppers state that if the ants ever stand up and realize they outnumber them it’ll be anarchy." Meanwhile, one concerned user joked: "Please wait until December, it’s too hot to go without the AC in Texas." @queenpettylexx1 The clip racked up over three million views, with more clips jumping on the bandwagon. Despite some TikTok users showing their support for the proposed strike (which is not organised by an official organisation) some are sceptical about its credibility. One TikToker shared a six minute breakdown of concerns, including that "everyone's demands seem different and weird," and that the overall concept seems "confusing." He managed to locate a website, seemingly linked to the "General Strike" which remains rather vague. "Specific demands will come from leaders and experts of existing fights for racial, economic, gender and environmental justice," the website read, to which the TikToker said: "You're telling me I'm not allowed to know who's organising this thing?" @cancelthisclothingco What am i missing? #followthemoney #seekthetruth #cancelthisclothingcompany #conspiracy #conspiracytheory #conspiracytiktok #generalstrike #strike #eattherich #capitalism #latestagecapitalism Another TikToker @crutches_and_spice said that while they are in support of a strike, "these one-day strikes should not be considered one-day strikes." @crutches_and_spice #stitch with @QueenPettyLex #greenscreenvideo ill work on carrying a tune until then #september1ststrike She continued: "They should be considered practice runs [for] making sure you have every single thing in place that you need for the longer strike." A third person called the proposed plan "poorly planned, poorly executed, and poorly shared," with lack of direction or safeguarding. Donald Trump mugshot memes: All the biggest reactions and jokes
It’s a landmark day in the history of the US, with Donald Trump surrendering and posing for a mugshot after turning himself in to face charges of election interference in Georgia. The mugshot marks a historical moment, as the first taken of a current or former US president, and it’s sure to become one of the most shared images of the 21st century. It’s been discussed at every stage along his indictment timeline. However, there was still uncertainty before the shot was taken on Thursday after Trump turned himself in at Atlanta's Fulton County Jail. Trump, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani and 17 other associates were indicted in Georgia this month for allegedly conspiring to subvert the 2020 election results in the state. Trump faces 13 charges, including accusations of engaging in a conspiracy to replace public officials with fake electors and engaging in overt acts to try to alter the result of the vote count. His bond has already been set at $200,000 and comes with specific conditions, including prohibiting him from intimidating any codefendants, witnesses or victims. The image has sparked a huge reaction, as you might imagine, with people reacting in their millions on social media. Is Danny Duncan alive? 'Accident' in YouTube star's latest video concerns fans
YouTuber Danny Duncan has given his fans a fright thanks to a cleverly edited video of a car accident that appeared to show him being wiped out by a flying vehicle. The 31-year-old shared a video on his popular channel, which has more than 7 million followers and mostly consists of comedy and prank clips. His latest video, which was posted on August 23rd, is called 'We Jumped My Car Through an RV!' and does exactly what it says on the tin. It involves Duncan and his friends building a ramp so they can drive a red Mustang at high speed through the side of a beat-up old RV. However, the 11-and-a-half-minute video ends on a worrying note. As Duncan begins to introduce the challenge from inside the RV, the car appears to smash right through the side of it demolishing the vehicle before the YouTuber could get out of the way. It's the final moment of the video and we aren't given reassurances as to whether Duncan is ok or not. However, it's highly unlikely that YouTube would allow a video on its platform where someone dies. Instead, Duncan's video is actually a smart bit of editing. Eagle-eyed viewers on X/Twitter notice that Duncan isn't in the frame when the car crashes through the RV. However, the speed of the car and the editing still managed to fool people who feared that Duncan had either been killed or was seriously hurt. "This Danny Duncan Vid fake right?" wrote one person. Another added: "Nah Danny Duncan’s editors deserve a raise for sure. I really thought bro died." A third said: "Danny Duncan uploaded footage of him getting hit in the head by a car. You think he’s ok?" Yet, as explained the YouTuber is completely fine and there is no reports of him being hurt or even having a scratch on him. 'Masterdating' is the new trend taking over the internet – but what is it?
It's becoming increasingly difficult to keep up with dating trends taking over the online sphere. We've had ghosting, love-bombing, breadcrumbing and phubbing, along with a host of other widespread terms on social media. But now, there's a less toxic trend singletons can get on board with, and it's called 'masterdating'. Masterdating is essentially dating yourself and is proving rather popular in 2023. It encourages you to treat yourself and take yourself out on solo dates and do all of the things stereotypically associated with having a significant other. In a chat with the New York Post, Amy Nobile, a holistic dating coach, said: "You’re teaching yourself about your own needs, requirements, the things that bring you joy. It’s about uncovering your own passions." Amy went on to encourage people to take advantage of the whole day and make it a frequent occurrence. "Send yourself flowers in the morning, send yourself a sweet note saying, ‘I can’t wait to see you tonight,’ schedule a fancy mode of transportation to get yourself to the date — make it a full day of love," she said. Now, as most of us well know, dating can be draining. But, one company came up with an innovative alternative to dating apps through a worldwide experiment. Earlier this year, the Pear Ring was first announced as a symbol to others that you're single and ready to mingle. "If 1.2 billion singles around the world wore a little green ring on their finger to show they’re single, we wouldn't need dating apps. IRL connection is the mission," the site read. Pear encourages singletons to wear the ring at all times. "In a bar, on a train, at the gym, on vacation, at your friend’s wedding, in a restaurant, walking to work. The world is your playground," they wrote. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Putin's thoughts on 'betrayal' resurface following Prigozhin's plane crash
Footage resurfaced online of Vladimir Putin's opinion on 'betrayal' following reports that Yevgeny Prigozhin, leader of the Wagner mercenary group, who was on board a plane that crashed in Russia on Wednesday. The brief snippet has since made its rounds on X/Twitter)and is taken from a 2018 documentary based on the Russian president. The interviewer asks Putin: "Does one need to be able to forgive?" "Yes, but not everything," he responded. "What can't be forgiven?" the interviewer asked to which Putin said: "Betrayal." It comes after reports that Prigozhin was among 10 others involved in a plane crash in Russia, heading from Moscow to St Petersburg, according to Russian state-owned media TASS. Prigozhin mounted a short-lived mutiny against Russia’s military leadership in June over the treatment of his private military company which fought alongside Russia's army in Ukraine. Initially, Putin denounced the rebellion as treason, but charges were dropped. The plane crash has since garnered heavy speculation that it may not have been an accident. Though, there is no evidence to support. A UK Government spokesperson said: "We are monitoring the situation closely." In the US, President Joe Biden said: "I don’t know for a fact what happened but I’m not surprised." A UK security source quoted in The Daily Telegraph newspaper, meanwhile, suggested the plane had almost certainly been shot down by Russia’s domestic intelligence agency, the FSB, acting on orders from President Putin. Alicia Kearns, the Conservative chair of the Commons Foreign Affairs committee, suggested the speed at which Russian authorities confirmed Mr Prigozhin was on the plane "should tell us everything we need to know". Writing on X/Twitter, the MP added: "For Putin there is one unforgivable sin: the betrayal of Putin and Russia. "He hunts down those he perceives to be traitors, (including) on British shores, such as Alexander Litvinenko and Sergei Skripal. "Now Yevgeny Prigozhin has been added to that list, ending Putin’s humiliation." Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. 'Surfer man' with long hair and shorts in 1917 photograph hailed as 'proof' of time travel
The appearance of a long-haired surfer dude in a vintage picture from 1917 has sparked theories about time travel. The picture, titled “Last Picnic” was taken more than 100 years ago, at San Josef Bay on Vancouver Island in Canada, in 1917. It depicts a group of people, both adults and children, sitting on a hill. The outfits of most in the picture are what would be considered old-fashioned today. The women are wearing ankle-length skirts and bonnets, while most of the men are dressed in shirts and smart trousers, with some even in waistcoats and ties. But, while most of the people in the image are dressed according to the times, some eagle-eyed viewers spotted one “surfer man” who wore baggy shorts and a large t-shirt and looked like he was straight out of the 20th century. The long-haired man has seemingly attracted the attention of those around him as one man next to him appears to be staring at him, while a woman standing on the right of the image looks to be pointing in his direction. The picture was shared online by YouTuber, Jamie D. Grant, who came across the interesting picture in Lester Ray Peterson’s 1974 historical book, The Great Cape Scott Story. He questioned whether the image was “proof” of time travel, saying: “Notice the group, their clothes, their hats. Even how they sit poised for a photo. “Now look closer. His head uncovered, his hair, his shorts. The man on the left stares in disbelief. Has a mysterious traveler proved the impossible and journey through time? What do you think?” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. 17 of the funniest Rudy Giuliani mugshot memes
Rudy Giuliani has become a meme...again. This time it wasn't because of a chaotic press conference held in the wrong venue or his hair dye running down his face but for the mugshot that was taken of him at the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office. The former mayor of New York City and lawyer of ex-president Donald Trump surrendered himself to authorities on Wednesday as part of the huge case against Trump's alleged attempts to interfere in the result of the 2020 US election. Both Giuliani and Trump have been hit with racketeering charges over claims they both tried to flip the result of the vote in Georgia which saw the state favour Joe Biden over the former host of the Celebrity Apprentice. Giuliani's bond has been set for $150,000 and despite the seriousness of the situation, people cannot get enough of the man who once claimed the Time Person of the Year award now facing potential jail time. Sure enough, the 79-year-old's mugshot has already become a viral meme. Here are some of our favourites. If this wasn't too much hilarity to comprehend then just imagine what its gonna be like when Trump's mugshot finally gets released.
