Family discover live frog in 'triple-washed' spinach packet
Kermit the Frog has always told us it’s not easy being green. But sometimes it’s not easy eating greens either. At least, that is, not for one Michigan family, who made a shocking discovery when unpacking their weekly shop. Amber Worrick told Fox 2 that her daughter screamed when she picked up the box of Earthbound Farms Organic Spinach only to find that there was a stowaway inside. “My daughter was screaming, she was like ‘Oh my God, it’s a frog,” Worrick said. “And I was like, ‘What?’” Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter The amphibian, which turned out to be a California native Pacific tree frog, was camouflaged among the leaves and still very much alive. Worrick explained to the local news outlet that she hadn’t noticed anything unusual when she picked up the veg at a local supermarket. “I didn’t see anything,” she insisted, adding that it “didn’t feel heavy” and she “didn’t feel anything wiggling.” Naturally, she went back to the Meijir supermarket, in the town of Southfield, to return the goods, bringing the tiny intruder along with her. Representatives for the shop told Fox 2 that the frog had been relocated to a new home outside by their team members, and that it was “alive and well”. Worrick seems to have been pleased at this result, telling the outlet: "I didn't want [the frog] to die, but I didn't want him in my food.” The spinach brand’s parent company, Taylor Farms, reportedly sent a statement apologising for the unusual mishap and vowing to work hard to prevent similar occurrences in future. Worrick was somewhat critical of them, however, saying of her purchase: "On the package, it says three times washed, or something like triple washed. I don't believe that it was washed or else they would have caught a whole live frog." Still, she conceded: “Thank God I didn’t eat [it]”. Have your say in our news democracy. Reggie Gray, the man with the folding chair from Alabama brawl, pictured after handing himself in
Since footage of the wild Alabama brawl swept social media, the 'folded chair' has become the centre of attention. And now, the man who handled the famed chair Reggie Gray has handed himself in after police urged him to “contact local law enforcement,” as “there’s more interviews to conduct with him.” Gray is now being held in Municipal Jail with local police chief describing the 42-year-old as the man "wielding that folding chair." For those unaware, a fight broke out on August 5 near Montgomery Riverfront Park, after two white men started arguing with a Black dock worker. Things soon escalated before more people jumped in to seemingly defend the man. Four people have since been arrested, and "there’s a possibility more will follow after the review of additional video," the police told The Independent. People were thrown into the water and a folded chair was hit over someone's head. The footage prompted X users (formerly known as Twitter) to do what they do best: Memeify it, with the 'inventor' of the folding chair being the centre of memes across social media. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Reggie Gray, hailed The Chair Warrior online by many, was been asked to contact the police department for questioning after 21-year-old Mary Todd, Richard Roberts, 48, Zachery Shipman, 25, and Allen Todd all handing themselves in following the mass brawl. After police asked Gray to come forward the responses soon came rolling in, with one writing: "Reggie Gray needs our support & hopefully a GoFundMe gets started for good representation." Another urged people to "leave the chair man alone." The Montgomery Police Department said they "acted swiftly to detain several reckless individuals for attacking a man who was doing his job," and that "Warrants have been signed and justice will be served." Reed continued: "This was an unfortunate incident which never should have occurred. As our police department investigates these intolerable actions, we should not become desensitized to violence of any kind in our community. Those who choose violent actions will be held accountable by our criminal justice system." Have your say in our news democracy. Andrew Tate says that he's 'go back to prison' in bizarre publicity stunt
Andrew Tate says that he's 'go back to prison' in bizarre publicity stunt
The controversial influencer and internet personality Andrew Tate is to livestream himself for 24 hours in a fake jail cell, following his release from a real-life cell awaiting trial on charges of human trafficking. The former kickboxer posted a promotional video for the stunt on Twitter, saying: “I’m going back to jail. On August 12, Saturday at 10pm Romanian Time. I will spend 24 hours inside a re-creation of my experience in jail. No phones, No freedom.” Tate and his brother Tristan, both of whom have dual US and British citizenship, were charged in June along with two Romanian female suspects of human trafficking, rape and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women. The suspects have denied the allegations. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter On 4 August a Romanian court placed Tate under judicial control, a less restrictive measure than the house arrest he had previously been subject to. He was held in a cell for 92 days earlier this year. The latest publicity stunt appears to be designed to garner sympathy among his loud, mostly male and often misogynistic fanbase. Tate has repeatedly bemoaned his detention, and the latest video includes stock footage of cockroaches, which he says he shared his cell with. Romania’s anti-organised crime agency alleges the Tate brothers and two other defendants formed a criminal group in 2021 “in order to commit the crime of human trafficking” in Romania as well as the US and Britain. The agency alleges that seven female victims were deceived and transported to Romania, including some who were “misled” by “false claims of marriage and love”. The alleged victims were taken to buildings in Ilfov county where prosecutors said they were sexually exploited and subjected to physical violence by the gang. One defendant is accused of raping a woman twice in March 2022, according to the statement. Tate, who has lived in Romania since 2017, and his brother have denied all of the allegations, with a trial due to take place. Have your say in our news democracy. TikTok 'time traveller' claims there will be a major cancer breakthrough in August
TikTok 'time traveller' claims there will be a major cancer breakthrough in August
A TikTok user claiming to be a time traveller claiming to be from the year 2671 has made a bold claim about a major scientific discovery that is set to happen today (August 12th) - except there is a catch. The account named @theradiantimetraveller has more than 560, 000 followers on TikTok and has been making outlandish predictions since sharing their first video in November 2022. In one of the most popular videos on the account, which has more than 1.5 million views the 'time traveller' addresses accusations that they are a 'fake' by highlighting several events that they think will take place in 2023. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter One of the predictions says that on August 12 "scientists create a cure for lung and skin cancer, using a pituitary gland from a squirrel." It's quite a statement and slightly more feasible than an alien invasion or the apocalypse happening. @radianttimetraveler There is a lot you need to know… #fyp #radianttime #foryou #timetravel #viral #timetraveler #xyzbca However, it won't take a genius to notice that there is a massive flaw in this video as many of the other predictions haven't even remotely happened. For instance, the first prediction says that on March 23rd 8000 people were chosen to save humanity by an alien called "The Champion" who will bring them to another planet to save Earth from another alien race. Sounds like a bad sci-fi movie... Next up, on May 15th a megatsunami apparently hit San Francisco claiming 200,000 casualties and then on June 12th a 9.5 magnitude earthquake opens a 5 mile deep trench unleashing species long thought to be extinct. Once again, you'd think you might have heard about a few of these things on the news. The video wraps up with two predictions for December. The first says a large crystal with healing powers will be discovered in the Amazon Rainforest and that scientist will discover a way to grow replacement organs. The TikTok was shared in March and has been met with ridicule given that the vast majority of these claims haven't happened at all. One person wrote: "Why hasn’t any of your predictions come true yet?" Another said: "Well no one got taken by aliens on 23rd." A third added: "It's August and I can assure to you that none of this happened." Have your say in our news democracy. People are only just learning what brand name Lego means
People are only just learning what brand name Lego means
People have just discovered the meaning behind the iconic children's toy brand Lego and they're stunned. Founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Kristiansen, the company has significantly grown from a small carpenter’s workshop to a worldwide phenomenon. The company was passed on to Ole's son and is currently owned by the founder's grandson, Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen. Interestingly, the brand name is an abbreviation of the two Danish words "leg godt," which ironically means "I put together" in Latin – though that wasn't the founder's intention. He was initially swaying towards "LEGIO" (legions) but ended up opting for Lego, which means "play well". They have since gone on to become a household name, winning Toy of the Century twice. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter In the 1950s, the second-generation owner Godtfred Kirk Christiansen said: "Our idea has been to create a toy that prepares the child for life - appealing to their imagination and developing the creative urge and joy of creation that are the driving forces in every human being." Last year, the company celebrated 90 years of Lego. "When my great-grandfather founded the company 90 years ago, he recognised that play could change the lives of children – it brings families together and helps children develop skills that can enable them to reach their full potential. He only had a small workshop, but he had big ambitions to ensure as many children as possible could experience the benefits that play brings," Thomas Kirk Kristiansen, Chairman of the LEGO Group said. "Whether 1932, 2022 or on our 100th Anniversary in 2032, we have and will always strive to continue Ole’s legacy by helping all families, wherever they are in the world, to play well." Supermarket closed after spider found with bite that causes permanent erections
An Austrian supermarket was forced to close after reports that a venomous spider that reportedly causes permanent erections was on the loose. The Brazilian Wandering Spider was spotted in Penny supermarket in Krems an der Donau, according to TMZ. Staff called authorities when they discovered the spider on Tuesday (8 August) and they've still not been able to locate it. It is suspected the spider made its way to Europe by hiding in bunches of bananas shipped over to supermarkets. The Brazilian Wandering Spider not only delivers a poisonous bite but also acts like a natural Viagra with hours-long erections, Live Science reports. "The erection is a side effect that everybody who gets stung by this spider will experience along with the pain and discomfort," Romulo Leite of the Medical College of Georgia, told the publication. "We're hoping eventually this will end up in the development of real drugs for the treatment of erectile dysfunction." Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter It comes after a model almost sat on one of the world's most venomous spiders when visiting the toilet. "I just went to the toilet, and I got up and flushed the toilet and there is a big f***ing spider under the seat," Gabriella Pizzato (@gabpizzato) told TikTok viewers. "I was sitting there for about 20 minutes!" Gabrielle added. "Oh my God, I want to show you, it’s actually huge. I want to cry." After taking a few moments to regain her composure, the Aussie model said "it is huge" and appeared to be horrified at what she was looking at off-camera. "Oh my God, I just saw his legs. It’s like under the rim," she whispered as she flipped her camera around to the toilet where some toilet paper was left on the seat. Have your say in our news democracy. The controversial PragerU school cartoons explained
The controversial PragerU school cartoons explained
After it was announced that right-wing organisation PragerU was partnering with the state of Florida to provide educational content, people have been sharing the organisation’s cartoons on social media in complete shock about what they’re teaching. The cartoons, which are described by PragerU as “edu-tainment”, suggest that slavery was a “compromise”, Native Americans were “far-from peaceful”, BLM increased crime, as well as downplaying the impacts of slavery by saying that being a slave was better than being dead. The move comes as Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis has made a number of controversial moves in terms of education. DeSantis, who is running for president in 2024, has banned certain books, restricted the teaching of reproductive health and gender identity, and tried to block a high school’s AP African American studies course. The clips circulating come from PragerU’s online series called ‘Leo and Layla’s History Adventures’, where two children - Leo and Layla - travel back in time to speak to various historical figures. One clip shows Frederick Douglass, a prominent anti-slavery activist, calling slavery a “compromise” in order for the Founding Fathers to “get all thirteen colonies to unite as one country”. Later on in the clip, the BLM movement is hinted at after Douglass talks about William Lloyd Garrison, an abolitionist. In the clip Douglass tells Leo and Layla that they aren’t friends any longer because Garrison “refuses all compromises, demands immediate change, and if he doesn’t get what he wants, he likes to set things on fire.” In response, Leo and Layla tell Douglass “we’ve got that type in our time.” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter In reality, Garrison promoted non-violent methods of abolition, but had publicly burned a copy of the Constitution, calling it a “Covenant with Death, an Agreement with Hell”, referring to slavery being written into the Constitution. Douglass, took the view that the Constitution could be interpreted as anti-Slavery. In another clip that went viral Leo and Layla travel back in time to meet Christopher Columbus. The episode focuses on Columbus Day, that now often referred to as Indigenous Peoples’ Day to acknowledge honour their history and culture, rather than celebrate Columbus. Columbus tells the children that the Americas “wasn’t exactly a paradise of civilisation” and that the Natives were “far from peaceful” as well as calling certain tribes “cannibals”. When talking about slavery Columbus says “being taken as a slave is better than being killed, no?” But later says it’s “wonderful” that slavery is no longer the norm or viewed as the right thing, yet he tells Leo and Layla that they cannot judge him by the standards of the present day. After the announcement of the partnering, many shared the material on social media, with one user calling the content “propaganda”: And it seems Gavin Newsom, the Governor of California, agrees: Another calls the content “disgusting”: “This level of indoctrination would make any fascist dictator proud”, writes one user: Florida’s Department of Education said in a statement: “The Florida Department of Education reviewed PragerU Kids and determined the material aligns to Florida’s revised civics and government standards. PragerU Kids is no different than many other resources, which can be used as supplemental materials in Florida schools as district discretion.” Have your say in our news democracy.
