Man calmly eating his sandwich metres from riots dubbed 'Frenchest thing you'll see today'
A man calmly eating his sandwich while police and protestors in France clashed metres away from him has become the latest hero of the internet. In a video, dozens of angry protestors can be seen hurling projectiles at police dressed in full riot gear in what is believed to be a Parisian suburb. A large fire burns between the groups sending plumes of smoke into the air. Amid the chaos the man sits on a public bench eating his sandwich, apparently unfazed. The video published on 30 June quickly went viral, amassing 9.3m views. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Twitter users praised the man’s calmness, with one person saying: “Normal summer activity in France: a person casually eating his sandwich in the midst of anti-police riots.” Another person said: “When you buy a baguette in Paris everyone knows you are allowed to finish eating it anywhere you like.” One commenter called the scene: “The Frenchest thing you’ll see today.” Another said: “This is another level of bravery.” The scene comes after nearly a week of violent social unrest in France after police allegedly shot dead a 17-year-old boy of Algerian descent, named as Nahel M. Police initially suggested the teenager drove his car towards them intending to hurt them, local media wrote. But footage verified by the AFP news agency appears to show an officer pointing his weapon at the driver through the car window and firing at point-blank range as the person behind the wheel seemingly tries to drive off. The officer who allegedly fired the gun had said he opened fire because he felt his and his colleague’s lives were in danger. He has since been arrested on charges of voluntary manslaughter. Forty-five-thousand police officers were deployed across the country on Friday evening as the government scrambled to bring the situation under control, with everybody from President Emmanuel Macron to footballer Kylian Mbappe calling for an end to the violence. The video of the man eating his sandwich echoes a similar slip shared earlier this year during another French protest. In March, diners were filmed calmly drinking a glass of wine in Bordeaux while demonstrators lit fires in the streets metres away from them. It seems that even a nationwide social uprising won't come between the French and their lunch. Have your say in our news democracy. Woman stunned after finding man in his pants asleep on sofa during house viewing
Woman stunned after finding man in his pants asleep on sofa during house viewing
A woman was left stunned during a house viewing after discovering a young man sleeping on the sofa surrounded by booze. Katie Elliott was seeking new rental property for her and two friends. She went to view the three-bed pad with the letting agent. However, after arriving she discovered the house was not only filthy, but a current tenant was dozing on the couch. He was wearing a green T-shirt and black pants with a duvet half-covering him. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter There was a bottle of vodka and beer bottles on the table and litter - including a fag packet and food wrappers - scattered across the floor. Katie filmed it on her phone and was shocked by the house in Newcastle, but also found it hilarious. The 24-year-old said: “The letting agent warned me before we went in that it was extremely dirty and said that they were really struggling with it. “I didn't expect it to be that bad. “You could tell she was embarrassed and she was talking about how ridiculous it was. “The guy on the sofa didn't even notice us, I think he was just fast asleep to be honest. “However, it was 12pm so it wasn't even that early in the day. “It just me who viewed it but the rest of the house was just as bad too. “There was a guy in one of the bedrooms that was arguing with the woman about the mess not being his as he's not there that often as well.” Katie has also revealed, unsurprisingly, that her and her friend did not go for this property. She added “It might have been okay once all cleaned up but two of the rooms were tiny so it didn’t suit us. “The letting agent just kept saying I can only ask you to try and look past the mess. “I'm not definitely sure as my friend booked the viewing but I think it was students living there then. “With the area location, maybe students from Northumbria or Newcastle University.” Katie posted a video online of the viewing which has now gone viral with over 580,000 views and 46,300 likes on TikTok. Many online were left in hysterics at the video Katie posted from her nightmare viewing. Molly Krenz said: “That’s got to be student accommodation.” Danny Baker added: “I’d have industrial wellies in that house.” Hannah Shaida said: “You’re having a laugh here.” Kate Green remarked: “The wheeze I let out when I saw the corpse on the sofa.” Abigail joked: “The reason I was not getting a house share at uni.” Lewis added: “Im crying at the guy passed out.” Have your say in our news democracy. Adam McIntyre responds to Colleen Ballinger's apology with his own ukelele song
Adam McIntyre responds to Colleen Ballinger's apology with his own ukelele song
After Colleen Ballinger posted a video in response to the grooming and predatory behaviour allegations made against her, Adam McIntyre one of the first to speak about his experience with Ballinger whilst she was an adult and he was a minor, uploaded his own video. McIntyre, who is now 22, had raised issues publicly about Ballinger back in 2020. At the time, the 36-year-old known for YouTube personality 'Miranda Sings', responded to his claims, admitting to sending him a bra when he was just a teenager. During that apology video, she had said: "I don't know what part of my brain was missing at the time. But I am not a monster, I am not a groomer, and I shouldn't kill myself." At the time, people had largely accepted her apology and many turned on McIntyre as a result. But this year, McIntyre posted another video, this time over an hour long, documenting his relationship with Ballinger. In the video, he shared screenshots of a group chat he was in with Ballinger and other fans of her's called "Colleeny's Weenies," where she had asked a teenage McIntyre what his "favourite position" was. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter McIntyre's allegations led to others coming out about how Ballinger had made them uncomfortable whilst they were minors. McIntyre has initially responded to the video on Twitter saying: "As much as Colleen discredited & made fun of me, I'm glad her video did ONE thing, show you all Exactly the type of evil woman she is". However, McIntyre has now posted a response of his own, with the same title and same 'style'. hi. www.youtube.com At the beginning of his video, McIntyre picks up a ukulele, starts strumming the strings randomly and says: "Hey. It seems this is the only way she'll listen." "What was not true?" McIntyre asks when she says that the claims going around "aren't quite true." Later on, he says "we're all ears" when Ballinger claims that people don't care about her side of the story. He says that Ballinger "harassed" him for "three years in group chats." He also argues that in her 2020 apology video she "edited evidence to make a 17-year-old look bad." As well as saying that she doesn't have any facts to disprove his claims. When Ballinger tries to explain she was just trying to be "besties with everybody", McIntyre says: "Besties with children? Don't really know if that's helping your case." However he agrees with her when she says her behaviour was "weird": "It was weird," he sings, before bluntly saying, "very, actually." He also disagrees with Ballinger's claim that she "changed her behaviours and took accountability." He simply asks, "where? Where did you do that?" "There's making a mistake and then there's what you've done, for years," McIntyre adds. When Ballinger says that her YouTube persona Miranda Sings has always been PG-13 and that she has "always relied on parents to decide if they're comfortable with their families watching my YouTube videos or coming to my live shows." "You cater towards children," McIntyre says, "let's not pretend that Miranda Sings has not been a character catered towards children." In her song, Ballinger minimises an ex-fan named Becky, who came forward saying that when she was about 16 she went to a Miranda Sings show and got called up on stage for the "yoga challenge". "I am laying down and Colleen is spreading my legs," explains Becky. "She spreads them so far that you can see the spandex I was wearing under my romper." "I was lying under Colleen and she was smirking down at me while thousands of people were laughing and I was terrified that my body wasn't covered enough by the spandex or the romper. I basically felt naked, so it felt incredibly sexually violating," Becky shares. "For her to use my body as entertainment on stage really set my confidence back quite a lot." Becky also said that afterwards she felt that many men were staring at her in "a very predatory way." Colleen then referred to this situation in her song as simply a "fart joke." McIntyre puts down his ukulele and says: "You didn't make a fart joke. You called a fan, who was a minor, up on stage and spread their legs and made their body a joke, so much so that they felt threatened leaving the venue." He adds, "how dare you diminish what Becky spoke up about." Many viewers enjoyed McIntyre's response, with one fan commenting "Adam had the chance to do the funniest thing possible and he did." Does Vladimir Putin use a body double?
Does Vladimir Putin use a body double?
Russian leader Vladimir Putin has been accused of using a body double after people analyse a recent outing in public. The warmongering leader was seen in a rare moment interacting with crowds, taking photos and even kissing the forehead of a teenage girl in Derbent. But, footage of the event has reignited rumours that Putin is using a body double. Does Putin use a body double? Body double rumours around Putin have been circulating for years, with some people pointing to the so-called “evidence” lying in the ears. Ukraine's head of military intelligence, Major General Kyrylo Budanov, told the Daily Mail he believes there are at least three body doubles for Putin who have “all had plastic surgery to look alike”. He said: “We know specifically about three people that keep appearing, but how many there are, we don't know.” Budanov added: “The one thing that gives them away is their height. It’s visible in videos and pictures. Also gesturing, body language, and earlobes, since they are unique for every person.” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Did Putin use a body double in his recent appearance? Putin’s recent public appearance in Derbent was seen as wildly out of character for the Russian, whose grip on leadership almost took a hit after an attempted coup by Wagner mercenaries. He is rarely seen interacting with the Russian public, particularly since the Covid-19 pandemic emerged, so his latest outing has caused rumours to swirl once more. According to the Daily Mail, a Moscow diplomat said: “It is getting impossible to believe that there is only one Putin. There are several - very good lookalikes, yet they behave somewhat differently. “This one diving into the crowd in Dagestan behaves differently to the traditional Putin.” Another questioned why it was only weeks ago that he was meeting visitors in the Kremlin only after they had quarantined for two weeks, yet now he was amongst the crowds. Viktor Alksnis, a former Soviet Air Force colonel and politician who is now based in the West, asked: “Why is Putin meeting with visitors in the Kremlin after their two-week quarantine and at a great distance, while in Derbent is calmly into the crowd and even hugs and kisses some citizens? “How can the physical security of the president be ensured under such conditions? Something is not right here. It looks like a theatrical production in which Putin is not really Putin.” Have your say in our news democracy. Greta Gerwig's hotly anticipated Barbie film is set to hit screens next week – and people are already hooked. There is, however, one snippet in particular that's got everyone in a chokehold: a two-second clip of Margot Robbie's feet. In the trailer, the Australian actress is shown stepping out of her high heels and maintaining the doll's arched foot. It's even created a notable 65 per cent spike in searches for 'Barbie heels' in the last month alone. The shot sent social media spiralling, with some going as far as turning the scene into a viral TikTok challenge. In one clip that racked up over 100,000 views, TikToker Shannon said she felt inspired by the trailer to come up with the unique challenge. @shannascribner @barbiethemovie inspired me with a challenge idea!! "There’s no special effects, you’d be amazed how few [special effects] there are in this film actually," she said. "We didn‘t do that many takes of it, a couple of takes and I kind of held on to a bar so I was sturdy when I stepped. "We just put double-sided tape on the floor so that my shoes stayed still and I did have a pedicure that morning." Barbie will hit cinemas on 21 July. Have your say in our news democracy. Gen Z workers are quitting their jobs live on TikTok
Workers, particularly Gen Z and Millennials, are 'live-quitting' their jobs on TikTok under the hashtag #quittok. In the midst of 'the Great Resignation' - a term coined by organisational psychologist Anthony Klotz to capture the wave of employees leaving their jobs post-pandemic - has brought about various methods of people leaving their job, such as 'quiet quitting' which gained attention at the end of last year. Now a new method has entered the scene: live quitting. Users film or livestream themselves on the exact moment they quit. Whether it's in-person, over Zoom, or the moment they hit send on their resignation email. It seems many are seeking the support and comfort of up to millions of strangers online as they end one chapter and start another. The hashtag #quittok currently has over 50 million views showing many are resonating with the content. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter One user Darby posted a video in February of them on a call with their manager quitting their job. She joins a call with her manager saying: "I can't say it, I don't know how to say it," as you puts her face in her hands. Her boss sayings "I know, I knew it was coming when you that." "If it's what you feel like you need to do then I totally get it," her manager adds. "We will be so sad and we'll miss you." "I'm like, my heart is racing, I don't know why I'm so... it's be so like hard to figure out what to do but I think... I know I need to do it." Darby says, before the video ends. @durbinmalonster Quitting my corporate stable job that I love in this economy??? Y’all should have seen my dads face when I told him hahaha. Her TikTok currently has over 1 million likes, and viewers commented both Darby and her manager. "This manager is manager goals!!! Her support of you is huge!" Commented one user. Many others left Darby good luck wishes as she starts a new chapter. And Darby isn't the only one to document the moment of quitting. Another user, known as Stove, filmed and uploaded a TikTok of him quitting his job to TikTok last year. His manager calls him after Stove asked if "he had a few minutes to check in." @omgitsstovelol Live footage of me quitting one of the worst most demoralizing jobs I’ve ever had. Susan: Tory London mayoral candidate has been reduced to a meme
A London mayoral candidate has launched her campaign in earnest - and has become a complete meme by doing so. Susan Hall wants to be selected as the Tory candidate for the mayoral race, and is appealing to voters to choose her with some hastily made graphics. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter The graphic shows a photo of her against a blue background. Dramatic text alongside it reads "Susan." It adds: "The one Sadiq Khan fears," as well as "you are safer with Susan". But rather than run to cast their votes for "Susan", people found it hilarious: Hall has been a London Assembly member for five years. Her policies include reversing the ULEZ expansion, dealing with the housing crisis and cracking down on crime. Indeed, she said she will "hunt down and lock up" muggers and burglars by creating a special team within the Met tasked with tackling them. She is also known for trolling Gemma Collins, when she appeared on I'm A Celebrity in 2014. “OMG this fat woman Gemma is ghastly, really ghastly,” Hall tweeted, “however watching her squeal may be funny”. She also called Collins a “stupid fat blonde woman”. The Tory mayoral candidate for London is expected to be announced on 19 July, with the London mayoral election taking place on 2 May 2024. Being ridiculed while trying to reach high office - it is just part and parcel of British politics. Nevertheless, indy100 has contacted Hall to see how she feels about it. MSCHF's crumb-sized bag sells for over $63,000
Brooklyn-based art collective MSCHF have officially sold their crumb-sized bag for a staggering $63,000 for Pharrell William's online auction house, Joopiter. Following the success of their Big Red Boots, the designers returned with a "bag" measuring just 657 by 222 by 700 micrometres. It's modelled on Louis Vuitton's OnTheGo handbag, where Pharrell currently acts as the brand's creative director. Despite this, MSCHF'S chief creative officer Kevin Wiesner candidly told the New York Times that he did not ask the French brand for permission to use their design. "We are big in the ‘ask forgiveness, not permission’ school," Wiesner told the publication. On Wednesday (28 June), the microscopic bag sold for $63,750. Other items included in the auction were said to include: A 'Portrait of an English Lady' by George Condo ($1,050,000), a Lewis Hamilton x Takashi Murakami F1 Grand Prix Helmet ($387,500), a Louis Vuitton x Virgil Abloh Dream House Window Mannequin ($65,000) and a Pharrell Williams x Richard Mille RM 65-01 ($481,250). Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter It comes after the brand made waves earlier this year with a peculiar pair of boots that soon circulated on social media. Donned by the likes of WWE wrestler Seth Rollins, rapper Lil Wayne and Diplo, the MSCHF's Big Red Boots became an overnight hot topic with polarised views across the internet. "Man if y’all don’t get these big ugly ass Clifford the big red dog looking ass shoes outta here," one person joked, while another added: "This how I used to draw everybody feet in elementary school." Pink being handed random objects has become an instant meme
Singer Pink has become an instant meme after fans get creative about handing her things during concerts. The foundation for the new meme was laid when a fan at a London festival threw a plastic packet containing their mother’s ashes at the American singer-songwriter, leaving her stunned, saying it was a “first” for her. It was followed up by another viral clip of a fan handing Pink a massive 3kg wheel of brie, which the singer appeared thrilled by. Pink gratefully took the cheese and showed it to the crowd before thanking the fan for the gift and giving them an air hug. The clip has sparked a whole host of new memes as fans have creatively Photoshopped random items in the place of the brie wheel. The funniest Barbie and Oppenheimer memes as the internet continues its meltdown
The funniest Barbie and Oppenheimer memes as the internet continues its meltdown
The internet going crazy for two films about the ultimate kids’ doll and weapons of mass destruction couldn’t have been on many people’s 2023 bingo cards. But with Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer set to come out on the same day, 21 July, you’d be challenged to name a more iconic duo. The hype around the two movies could hardly have been more different. Barbie is, well, Barbie; it’s pink, pretty and plastic. Oppenheimer is the atom bomb, fire and brimstone, the destroyer of worlds. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter The internet doesn’t see it that way though. As cinemas gear up to show the movie back-to-back – and film goers decide which order they’re going to watch them in – the meme factory has been working overtime. Here are some of the best. It recently emerged that the Barbie dream house had mysteriously appeared in Malibu. It comes complete with a pool, huge balconies and that signature pink finish. Oh, and you can stay there on Airbnb soon. Unfortunately, Oppenheimer fans had an idea for how they could counter the excellent work done by Barbie’s marketing team with a slightly more destructive piece of marketing of their own. They wouldn’t... Would they? Someone even went to the effort of making a poster. As the tension builds ahead of the big release date, people look like they’re picking teams. Margot Robbie or Cillian Murphy? Greta Gerwig or Christphoer Nolan? Plastic dreams or the everlasting sleep? You decide. As one Twitter user said: there can be no Switzerland. If you’ve seen the Barbie trailer, you’ll know that at one point she questions her place on this mortal coil. (If you haven’t seen it… Have you been living under a rock?) It’s bold writing – but even more timely when you hear the sound of death and destruction coming from the cinema screen next door. People are already planning their days. Are you Oppenheimer first, then Barbie? (Otherwise known as Oppenbarbie.) Or are you doing it the other, incorrect way? Because if you’re seeing Barbie in the morning followed by a chaser of atomic doom in the evening (Barbenheimer, apparently), you’re doing it all wrong. Elsewhere, a pink explosion heralding a totally unprecedented crossover of the two showed that life truly can be stranger than fiction. There is always, always a ‘Sopranos’ reference. Which do you fall into? These two iconic houses in Santa Monica almost nail the difference in tone between the two films without even knowing it. Yes, of course, there is merch. Even Tom Cruise couldn't resist it. And finally, here’s what everyone will look like on 21 July. We can’t wait. Have your say in our news democracy. Entertainment Weekly unloads on reader after Nicole Kidman comment
Entertainment Weekly unloads on reader after Nicole Kidman comment
Many have expressed their love for a worker at Entertainment Weekly after their Twitter account had something to say to a reader. The official Entertainment Weekly Twitter account posted a link to their article about Tom Cruise with the caption "Tom Cruise, ex-husband of AMC ad sensation Nicole Kidman, is encouraging moviegoers to flock to theatres for a 'Barbie' and 'Oppenheimer' double feature." The reference of course to Nicole Kidman's iconic and somewhat meme-d advert for AMC. However one reader clearly didn't like the phrasing, replying: "it almost sounds like you are insulting her for no reason lol" "This is a Nicole Kidman stan account." Entertainment Weekly replied. However the reader wasn't impressed by this response: "homie you are owned by publishing conglomerate Dotdash Meredith" Clearly this was the last straw for the presumed social media manager for the Twitter account who wrote: "I am a 31-year-old with student loan debt, a useless journalism degree, and bills to pay. Just like the tweet and go." Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Readers loved the response and many took the time to support whoever is behind the account: "God bless the person who runs the entertainment weekly twitter account," wrote one user. Others referred to the person as a "hero". Others said the social media manager deserved a raise. However, the user EW was originally responding too wasn't impressed, calling the tweet "pathetic": A few hours later, the social media tweeted "what a day," adding that they would be at home "Cold Mountain (2003)" which stars Kidman.
