From Elle Fanning to Jennifer Lawrence: All the best-dressed stars at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival
Each year, the Cannes Film Festival red carpet sees the biggest stars in Hollywood and beyond gather in their finest threads. The 2023 festival, which began on Tuesday 16 May and will run until Saturday 27 May, has already served up a plethora of looks, from Elle Fanning’s delightfully risqué sequinned gown to Maya Hawke’s pleasantly demure mossy green dress. There have also been some surprising moments on the red carpet, such as Jennifer Lawrence’s unexpected choice of flip-flops instead of heels and a shock protest by a Ukrainian activist involving plenty of fake blood. Here are our picks for the best-dressed stars at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Elle Fanning Fans went wild for The Great star Elle Fanning’s silver Paco Rabanne dress that she wore on Thursday 18 May. The metal gown was declared the “party dress of the season” and included long, shard-like sequins and two metal cut-out snowflakes that covered the actor’s breasts. Jennifer Lawrence The Oscar-winning actor arrived on the red carpet on Sunday 21 May wearing a crimson Christian Dior couture gown for the premiere of the Anatomie D’une Chute (Anatomy of a Fall). The dress featured a corset bustier topped with a ruffled bust and a matching shawl worn around Lawrence’s arms. But it was her footwear that really stood out. Lawrence opted to descend the steps at the Palais des Festivals in a pair of casual black flip-flops instead of heels. Maya Hawke The Stranger Things star opted for a Prada ensemble at the world premiere of Asteroid City on Tuesday 23 May. Hawke wore a moss green strapless grown and baby blue gloves, accessorised with a chunky diamond necklace. Julia Fox Known for her daring fashion choices, actor Julia Fox has already appeared several times at this year’s Cannes Film Festival in outfits including transparent elements. She attended the Art of Elysium Paradis 25th anniversary party on Sunday 21 May wearing a see-through abstract breastplate atop a voluminous white skirt. The following day, while attending the premiere of The Idol, Fox wore a sheer gown that appeared to be constructed out of transparent plastic, designed by Nicolas Jebran. She completed the look with black lipstick. Troye Sivan Also attending the premiere of The Idol, which he stars in opposite Lily-Rose Depp, Troye Sivan wore an all-black ensemble on the red carpet on Monday 22 May. His outfit consisted of a black shirt with cut-outs under the collar, as well as a black jacket and trousers. He accessorised with a red rose and silver stem brooch on his lapel, and silver rings. Michelle Yeoh Newly minted Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh arrived at the festival wearing a green taffeta silk gown by Balenciaga Couture, with a matching stole. The look was completed with black opera gloves and black stiletto heels. Around her neck, she wore a black-and-white statement necklace. Gigi Hadid Gigi Hadid wore a strapless, structured Zac Posen gown that featured peplum details around her hips and a slightly flared skirt. The model attended the premiere of Firebrand on Sunday 21 May. She accessorised with a number of jewels from Messika, including a collar necklace, two pairs of drop earrings and multiple diamond rings. Natalie Portman Natalie Portman made jaws drop when she arrived at the Cannes Film Festival wearing a recreation of Christian Dior’s iconic Junon dress, which was first designed in 1949. The actor’s gown features a white bustier and petal-like layers cascading down the voluminous skirt, with each petal edged with sequins. It was named as a nod to Greek mythology and was inspired by peacock feathers. Lily Gladstone Lily Gladstone made her Cannes debut wearing a Valentino Haute Couture gown for the premiere of Killers of the Flower Moon on Saturday 20 May. The actor’s dress featured large yellow flowers against a black base, with a matching cape around her shoulders. She wore dangling earrings by Jamie Okuma, as well as other jewellery by Chopard. Joe Alwyn attends Celine dinner at Cannes Film Festival
Joe Alwyn has attended a dinner hosted by Celine artistic director Hedi Slimane during the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. The British actor was photographed at the event at Hotel du Cap-Eden Roc on Monday night (22 May). It marks the 32-year-old’s first appearance at a public event since he and Taylor Swift reportedly split up in April after six years together. Alwyn, who has writing credits for several of Swift’s songs under the pseudonym William Bowery, stepped out in a pale pink satin button-down shirt, a black suit jacket and black trousers. Other celebrities who attended the fashion house’s intimate dinner included model Kaia Gerba, Blackpink member Lisa, and BTS member V. Neither Alwyn nor Swift, 33, have publicly addressed or confirmed their break-up. The pair preferred to keep their relationship private when they were dating and rarely spoke about one another with the press. Entertainment Tonight first reported the split, quoting a source as saying that the “relationship had just run its course” and that the split was “not dramatic”. Another source told People on 10 April that the couple “had rough patches before and always worked things out, so friends thought they would take some time apart but eventually come back together”. However, the couple “ultimately” decided that they “weren’t the right fit for one another”, the source added. The “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” singer is currently on her Eras Tour, which began on 18 March and is set to end on 9 August. Alwyn, who usually attended Swift’s shows in support of the singer, had not been seen at any of her concerts since the tour began. Swift sparked rumours that she has been dating The 1975 frontman Matty Healy after he appeared at several of her shows and joined Phoebe Bridgers on-stage to open the pop star’s show in Nashville. Healy, 34, played the guitar during Bridgers’ song “Motion Sickness”. The two musicians have been spotted multiple times together since she ended things with Alwyn, including at several locations in New York City. This week, Swift told her audience in Foxborough, Massachusetts, that she has “never been this happy in my life in all aspects of my life ever” amid the rumoured romance. A video shared to TikTok showed the singer saying: “It’s not just a tour, I just sort of feel like my life finally feels like it makes sense. So I thought I’d play this song which brings me a lot of happy memories.” Read More Maya Hawke raises eyebrows at Cannes as she pirouettes down red carpet Taylor Swift tells fans she’s ‘never been this happy’ amid rumoured Matty Healy romance Sylvester Stallone’s daughters call Rocky star a ‘savant’ when it comes to their dating lives Taylor Swift tells fans she’s ‘never been this happy’ amid Matty Healy rumours Let’s not judge Taylor and Matty – rebound relationships aren’t always doomed Taylor Swift fans in dismay over new photo ‘confirming’ Matty Healy romance

Gisele Bündchen auctions off dress for $48k at charity gala
A Stella McCartney gown previously worn by Gisele Bundchen has sold for a whopping $48,000 at the supermodel’s annual charity gala. On 20 May, Bündchen attended the Luz Alliance Gala in Miami to benefit the Brazil Foundation. The Brazilian model wore the Stella McCartney dress to the event before auctioning it off her back, ultimately raising a reported $1m in humanitarian pandemic relief to families in Brazil. The white gown, which featured a one-shoulder sleeve and swooping neckline, was previously worn by Bündchen at the Hollywood for Science Gala in 2019. Four years later, it appeared that the former Victoria’s Secret Angel had reworked the dress by removing the long cape that fell from the sleeve on one side. Her stylist, Evet Sanchez, said on Instagram that Bündchen removed the cape to give the dress a “fresh” look. She styled the sustainable white gown with a matching ivory clutch, green heels, and emerald-and-diamond earrings. Taking to Instagram, the mother of two shared her praise for those who attended the event and donated to the Luz Alliance Fund – which Bündchen founded in 2020 to support environmental conservation and rehabilitation projects in Brazil. “I used to think how can I make a difference?” she captioned the post, which included photos from the charity gala. “I am just one person in this enormous world and there is just too much to do, but early on I understood that to amplify change it is essential to join forces and that through dedication and collaboration, everything is possible.” “From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank everyone who was at the Luz Alliance Gala yesterday, helping us to support nature,” she continued. “Together we were able to raise funds that will help so many people and projects in Brazil.” Bündchen added, “As Desmond Tutu said: ‘Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.’” During the event, Gisele Bündchen also made a rare red carpet appearance with her fraternal twin sister, Patricia. Speaking to People, she thanked her sister for the work she’s done with the Brazil Foundation and expressed how happy she was to attend the gala with her. “This was my first gala and couldn’t have done it without my sister Pati who worked diligently with the Brazil Foundation to organise this special evening,” Bündchen said. “It was very special to have her here tonight. She worked so hard to organise this event as she does every day.” The model went on to describe her close relationship with her twin sister, adding: “I know she’s got my back like I got hers. We trust each other and we always want the best for one another and that is priceless.” Bündchen, who announced her divorce from NFL star Tom Brady last year, also reflected on how much her family means to her. In addition to Patricia, she has four other sisters: Rafaela, Graziela, Gabriela, and Raquel. “My family is everything to me and my sisters are my best friends even if sometimes we disagree,” she shared. “Family is what gives us our foundation, they are our greatest teachers, and they help us become who we are.” Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady, who finalised their divorce in October 2022 after 13 years of marriage, share a 12-year-old son, Benjamin, and nine-year-old daughter, Vivian. Julia Louis-Dreyfus reveals her 1987 wedding dress was inspired by Princess Diana
Julia Louis-Dreyfus has revealed that she took inspiration from Princess Diana’s iconic wedding dress for her own nuptials more than three decades ago. The Seinfeld alum appeared on Live with Kelly and Mark on 22 May, where she opened up about her nearly 36-year marriage to actor Brad Hall. “You and your husband have been married for 35 years,” Ripa said, as she showed a photo from their 1987 wedding ceremony. The photo showed the newlywed couple smiling and walking down the aisle together. For the occasion, Louis-Dreyfus wore a white wedding dress with a flowing ball gown skirt and quintessential ’80s puff sleeves adorned with ruffles. She tied her hair back in a low bun and completed the look with a flower crown and a long white veil. “Yes. Look at that wedding dress,” the comedian replied, laughing. “You’ll see I fashioned my dress after Princess Diana. It’s the times, I guess.” Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s wedding gown wasn’t a far cry from the one worn by the late Princess of Wales on her wedding day to the then-Prince of Wales in July 1981. Since then, the voluminous bridal gown has become one of the most recognisable dresses of all time. On 29 July 1981, an estimated 750 million people worldwide watched as Lady Diana Spencer became Princess Diana during a royal wedding ceremony at St Paul’s Cathedral in London. Her wedding dress was designed by former husband-and-wife duo David and Elizabeth Emanuel. The silk-taffeta gown featured a fitted bodice overlaid with panels of antique Carrickmacross lace that originally belonged to Queen Mary. It also included a sequin-encrusted train measuring 25 feet that remains the longest in royal wedding history. Much like Kate Middleton’s wedding dress in 2011, there was so much secrecy surrounding Princess Diana’s gown that the Emmanuels were required to create an alternate gown in case the dress was revealed preemptively to the public. In 2021, Princess Diana’s wedding dress was displayed at Kensington Palace as part of a temporary exhibition exploring royal style. The gown – which is now privately owned by her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry – marked the first time it had gone on display in 25 years. Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Brad Hall will celebrate 36 years of marriage this June. Last year, the 62-year-old actor celebrated her wedding anniversary by sharing a sweet tribute to her husband on social media. “Even though we’re surrounded by a lot of bad news, I’m celebrating some good news today – Been tied to this superb guy for 35 years!” she captioned the Instagram post, which featured their smiling wedding photo. “What in the living hell? How did that happen so quick?” The couple – who share sons Henry, 28, and Charlie, 23 – first met as students at Northwestern University, when Louis-Dreyfus auditioned for Hall’s theater production in the early 1980s. They were married on 25 June 1987 in Santa Barbara, California. Bridal suits: The best tailored looks for brides who don’t want to wear a dress
Gone are the days when every bride walked down the aisle wearing a demure, white, floor-length gown, her face covered with a diaphanous veil. Bridal suits have become hugely popular with women who, for whatever reason, don’t want to don a dress when they tie the knot. Part of the ‘alternative bridalwear’ trend, tailoring is ideal for brides who don’t want a cookie-cutter wedding like everyone else’s. Others choose a low-key tailored look for the registry office or legal ceremony, then don a showstopping gown for the main event. There are lots of benefits to choosing a bridalwear suit. Not only will you stand out from the crowd, you’ll look cool and feel at ease on your special day (corseted gowns, on the other hand, aren’t exactly comfy). You’re likely to get a lot more wear post-wedding out of a white suit or jumpsuit than you are a floor-sweeping dress, and there’s a wide range to choose from, whether you prefer a loose, laidback cut, or a figure-hugging silhouette. Plus, you can find some incredible suits for a lot less than the price of the average wedding gown.
