Man lies about having cancer to raise $30,000 to enter poker competition
A man has admitted to lying about terminal cancer to raise money to enter a poker tournament. The Las Vegas World Series of Poker tournament is said to cost around $10,000, with the highest buy-in event at a staggering $250,000 for the Super High Roller. Rob Mercer from California was so desperate to take part that he set up a GoFundMe page for his fake "stage 4 colon cancer". In total, he swindled people out of thousands, which he later admitted it to the Las Vegas Review Journal. "I did lie about having colon cancer. I don’t have colon cancer. I used that to cover my situation," he said. "What I did was wrong. I shouldn’t have told people I have colon cancer. I did that just as a spur-of-the-moment thing when someone asked me what kind of cancer I had." He continued: "I’m sorry for not being honest about what my situation was. If I would have done that from day one, who knows what would have happened." A spokesperson for the crowdfunding website told the outlet that donators will be getting full refunds. "GoFundMe has zero tolerance for the misuse of our platform and takes swift action against those who exploit the generosity of our community," they said. "We have removed this fundraiser for violating our terms of service, all donors have been fully refunded, and Rob Mercer has been banned from using the platform for any future fundraisers. Additionally, GoFundMe cooperates with law enforcement investigations of those formally accused of wrongdoing." Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Watch the trailer for Blink 182 member Tom DeLonge's UFO conspiracy film
Blink-182’s Tom DeLonge has long been a vocal believer in aliens, government cover-ups around UFOs and the paranormal. Now, he has directed a feature film which deals with subject, and which gives a not-so-subtle nod to his own worldview of extraterrestrial life. The film, Monsters of California, centres around a group of high school misfits in America, who discover research left behind by a missing government agent. They embark on a “dangerous adventure to uncover a paranormal conspiracy in Southern California that brings them face-to-face with some of the government's most guarded mysteries”. It comes as UFO hysteria hit fever pitch this year, with multiple high-profile investigations into reports of potential alien activity by the US government. The first was a US Congressional hearing into unidentified anomalous phenomena which took place over the summer. The second was a NASA report into the subject, which culminated in a press conference last week, where the agency’s boss Bill Nelson admitted that he believed there were aliens somewhere in the universe. DeLonge said: "The film takes my fascination with the unexplained, combines it with the skate culture I grew up a part of, and tosses in my ridiculous sense of humour that millions got to witness during my Blink-182 days. “In recent years, I’ve had the good fortune of helping the government remember how much they care about UFOs through the work we do at To The Stars, and it's that experience which helped inspire this movie. I can't wait for audiences to see the f****d up fun adventure these kids go on.” DeLonge’s film is set for a 6 October release. Company offers weight loss drug as 'job benefit'
A company in Australia has defended its decision to offer Ozempic as a job benefit. The marketing agency based in Melbourne reportedly emailed staff with a focus on their "personal wellness" journeys. In the email obtained by AU News, the company said it would pay for the medication for staff, and while they acknowledged they are not "medical professionals" they aim to have a more "proactive approach to health." "Below are two options that might pique your interest. These are uncharted territories, and while we aren’t medical professionals, we can share the impact we’ve observed overseas," it read while detailing Ozempic and Wegovy as the options with a monthly allowance of $200. It continued: "Let’s stay ahead of the curve. If you’re interested in these products or have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out. Your health is our priority, and we’re here to support you on your journey." The company's manager has since told the publication that the email has been met with "overwhelmingly positive" responses from members of staff. "Our intention is not to promote the product for weight loss contrary to these guidelines. Rather, we aim to provide our staff with information about various health and wellness options," she told the publication. "We are not, in any way, attempting to displace or disregard medical opinion. We believe in the importance of informed decision-making in consultation with healthcare professionals." Employees who have shown interest in the drug have been directed to their doctor. There have already been two people who have taken the company up on the offer. The 29 best $78 airport food memes after columnists complaint goes viral
A conservative columnist in the United States has accidentally turned himself into a meme after complaining about a supposed meal that he paid for in Newark Airport which cost him $78. David Brooks, who writes for the New York Times, tweeted an image of a burger, fries, salad and a beverage which he claimed cost him $78. Brooks wrote on X/Twitter "This meal just cost me $78 at Newark Airport. This is why Americans think the economy is terrible." However, things soon backfired on Brooks after the restaurant itself, the 1911 Smokehouse Barbecue, noted that the tab was corrected but 80 per cent of the bill was made up of Brooks's drinks orders. On Facebook, the venue wrote: "Looks like someone was knocking back some serious drinks - Bar tab was almost 80% and he's complaining about the cost of his meal. Keep drinking buddy - we get paid off everything." The clapback has since been added as a community note to the post which continues to go viral. In fact, it's gone so viral that the post has now spawned its own meme with others sharing mock images of meals that they pretended they paid $78 for. Here are some of our favourites. If that wasn't bad enough for Brooks the restaurant are now selling their own D Brooks Special' which doesn't cost $78. Hundreds of people who 'identify as dogs' met up in public to bark at each other
Hundreds of people who identify as dogs have met up in Berlin city centre but not all is as it seems. The group communicated by barking and howling at each other. Around 1,000 trans-species activists met up at the Berlin Potsdamer Platz railway station in the German capital. The group said they do not identify as human beings and instead wish to be recognised as pooches. One local said: “Just abandon them in the Siberian tundra and let them survive with their canine instincts.” Wilson commented: “I don't see anyone smelling the tail of others.” Jose wrote: “Can you imagine when they all have to defecate?” Eduardo remarked: “Call animal control and give them their rabies doses.” Ivan said: “But if they identify as dogs, why do they put on masks?” However, a community note on the now viral post suggested that it was something altogether different. The note wrote: "This gathering occurred during Folsom Europe, which is a gathering of gay men who are into various fetishes. This particular fetish is called pup play, and these individuals, mostly young, are cosplaying. Most do not believe they are dogs but are wearing a fetish costume." The note also provides a link to SDLGBTN which offers an explainer on pup play. In 2019, British man Tom Peters hit the headlines when he identified as a Dalmatian. Trans-species people do not feel or identify as human beings, but instead as specific animals or mythological beings. The most common creatures are dogs, cats, horses, birds, unicorns, dragons, elves, and even angels. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Randolph White given the remix treatment after F-35 jet interview goes viral
A local man in South Carolina named Randolph White has become an internet sensation, complete with his own remixes, after recreating the sound he heard when the missing F-35 stealth jet crashed near his home. Earlier this week, the US military appealed to the public to help them find the expensive missing plane following a "mishap" that saw the pilot eject from the jet, which carried on flying regardless. Although the missing jet inspired plenty of memes it was eventually found having crashed in rural South Carolina. However, the story has now taken on a new leaf thanks to Randolph White. Speaking to an NBC affiliate, White, wearing an iconic straw hat and what looks like a security vest, said that he was "in the bathroom taking a shave" when he heard an almighty sound takeover his "nice and quiet and peaceful" area. He added that the noise sounded like a cross "between a screech and a whistle" and in a moment that few people would have expected began to recreate the sound himself. “I said, ‘What in the world is this?'” he continued. “And I heard a boom! Then my whole house shook.” White admitted that he thought a meteorite had crashed into the Earth but added "well if it was an airplane, it needs to be reported because that thing was flying just too low." A day later helicopters started circling the area which White thought "somebody must have robbed a bank” or “killed some people or whatever. So, I walked up there, and they told me it was about the plane." The interview has since been viewed more than 4 million times after it was shared by Barstool Sports on X/Twitter. White has now become a viral sensation and his mesmerising interview has now been given several remixes which are well worth your time.
