Sky News faces backlash after reporting Holly Willoughby’s This Morning exit from war zone
Sky News faces backlash after reporting Holly Willoughby’s This Morning exit from war zone
Sky News has been criticised by viewers for reporting the breaking news of Holly Willoughby's exit from ITV's This Morning live from a war zone, where they'd been covering the Israel-Hamas conflict. After presenting the daytime programme for 14 years, the 42-year-old posted a statement on her social media where announced she would not be returning to the show. Sky News presenter Mark Austin has been reporting live on the ground in Jerusalem about the Israel-Hamas conflict when coverage suddenly changed to the news on Willoughby leaving. “Let’s get some news away from here now,” Austin said, from on a hillside at night time with the landscape of the country's capital in the background. “Presenter Holly Willoughby has told ITV that she will not return to host This Morning." He added: “She has not returned to the show since a man was charged last week with an alleged plot to kidnap and murder her.” Then Sky News studio correspondent Shamaan Freeman-Powell also added more details to the coverage surrounding the TV presenter's departure. After this, viewers took to social media to criticise the broadcaster's choice of announcing this showbiz news from a war zone, calling it a "parody," "tasteless," and "utterly bizarre." In her farewell statement to the Willoughby wrote: "To everyone who has ever worked on the show over the years, thank you so so much. This is such a difficult goodbye, you are incredible and I forever will be proud of what we’ve done together. Thank you to everyone at ITV for being supportive. To every guest who has sat on our sofa, thank you." "Most of all, thank you to the wonderful viewers. You’ve been so loyal, so supportive and the very best company every day. "Richard and Judy said ‘we only look after this show, it will always belong to the viewers’. "It’s been an honour to just be part of its story and I know this story has many chapters left to go... I will miss you all so much." Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Big Brother UK fans share support as Hallie comes out as trans to housemates
Big Brother UK fans share support as Hallie comes out as trans to housemates
Big Brother UK is back on our TV screens after a five-year hiatus (this time rebooted by ITV and hosted by AJ Odudu and Will Best), and the series has already been praised for its diversity, as housemate Hallie came out to her fellow contestants as transgender during Monday night’s episode. The 18-year-old youth worker from London was one of 16 housemates to enter the Big Brother house this week, with the line-up also featuring Wolverhampton makeup artist and Muslim Farida, and Coventry DJ and amputee Dylan. More than 2.5 million people tuned in to Sunday night’s launch show, with the series already branded “too woke” by the usual critics - despite past winners including trans woman Nadia Almada and deaf Welshman Sam Evans. Many fans of the show have responded to the negativity by pointing out Big Brother has “always been diverse”. Alongside Farida having a chat with housemates about halal meat, Monday’s episode also saw Hallie tell the group she felt she “wasn’t being 100 per cent authentic in myself” when she entered the house the day before. She said: “So I just thought I would let everyone know, I’m trans, if you didn’t know already. I just thought I’d make that loud and clear. “So yeah, I’m a trans woman, if you didn’t know. Just wanted to bring that up.” Hallie received an outpouring of support from fellow housemates after coming out, with everyone sharing their pronouns as a result. During a discussion with 25-year-old barman Jenkin and 40-year-old NHS manager Kerry, Hallie revealed she would use the £100,000 prize money on a “designer vagina” if she went on to be crowned winner of the reality TV show. “The mind doesn’t match the body – that’s the best way to describe being trans. I have a female mind, but the body just doesn’t match,” she explained. After Monday’s episode was broadcast, Hallie received a huge outpouring of support online for the “powerful” statement made in the current “political climate”: Even narrator Marcus Bentley addressed the online reaction to the series, posting on X (formerly Twitter): “Diverse enough for you?” Absolutely, Marcus. F1: Esteban Ocon vomited in his helmet during ‘horrible’ Qatar Grand Prix
F1 driver Esteban Ocon has revealed he was “throwing up” during the Qatar Grand Prix on Sunday 8 October. Humidity, 40C temperatures and high-speed corners made the race incredibly tough for the drivers, with Lando Norris also calling the conditions “too dangerous”. After finishing seventh in the race for Alpine, Ocon explained that he was sick over the course of two laps - something that has “never happened” in the past. “I was throwing up by lap 15, 16. For two laps I think,” Ocon told Sky Sports. “I was doing that and thinking ‘s***, it’s going to be a long one’. I managed to get it under control just mentally and just focus on what I’ve got to try and do.” Read More Mikel Arteta hails ‘fantastic’ young Arsenal side as they break Man City hex Sir Alex Ferguson praises wife Cathy as he reveals ‘she sacrificed everything for me’ Ryder Cup venue engulfed by raging fire as smoke fills air in drone footage

Scale of deadly Russian strike in Kharkiv village shown in drone footage
A Russian rocket blast reduced a village cafe and store in eastern Ukraine to rubble on Thursday 5 October, killing at least 51 civilians - including a six-year-old boy - in one of the deadliest attacks in the war in months. Drone footage shows the aftermath of the attack, where rescuers searched for survivors in the remains of the only cafe in the village of Hroza, located in the Kharkiv region. Around 60 people, including children, were attending a wake at the cafe when the missile hit, Ukrainian officials said. Volodymyr Zelensky described the strike as “a demonstrably brutal Russian crime” and the White House also condemned the “horrifying” attack.
