'His job is beach' is the internet's new favourite meme
Barbie, which has now been in cinemas for a week and set countless box office records, continues to be a viral sensation with the latest meme coming courtesy of Ken's job in the film: beach. If you've seen the film (and if not, then why not?) then you will have probably been charmed by Ryan Gosling's performance as the confused and downtrodden Ken who apart from trying to catch the eye of Barbie has taken the internet by storm for his very simply job. Although Ken doesn't feel like his role in Barbie Land is fulfilling his many dreams and desires he does take his job at the beach very seriously and is very keen to let everyone know about it. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter This hilariously brief one-liner is repeated a few times during the movie but despite there being bigger jokes throughout the film this one gag has captured meme makers of the world's imaginations with many using the line for other big screen characters. But what if Ken went to the wrong beach... Sadly beach is not for everyone. Other jobs are available. With all that in mind we're off to find out how to apply for the beach job. Mitch McConnell memes are another sign the internet at its worst
Mitch McConnell memes are another sign the internet at its worst
You might detest his politics, but can cracking jokes at the expense of an 81-year-old having a very public health episode ever be a good look? When Republican Senator Mitch McConnell appeared to freeze mid-sentence during a press conference, before being led away by his team, social media was quickly inundated with reaction. McConnell stopped speaking for 19 seconds before being escorted away by concerned colleagues, appearing to sway slightly and lose focus. An aide explained that McConnell had “felt lightheaded and stepped away for a moment”. They continued: “He came back to handle Q&A, which as everyone observed was sharp.” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter The memes following the incident were relentless, with people calling on him to retire. Again, much like the reaction to the Titan submersible tragedy and the riots in France earlier this summer, it shows the often cruel, reactionary nature of social media, with people quick to chip in on major incidents in the name of a few easy likes. Calling for younger leaders to represent Americans is perfectly valid, but outright mocking and joking about what appeared to be a serious health concern shows the internet at its least empathetic. Yes, it’s a buzzkill sentiment, and McConnell’s brand of politics has been completely oppositional to many over the years, but that shouldn’t excuse piling on an elderly public figure suffering an episode in the most public of spaces, should it? Some did express similar thoughts online, with one writing: “Oh also about this McConnell business. Y’all need to keep it cute with your insults! Not about McConnell (**** him) but because several people are making ableist and ageist jokes. You can talk about him without elderly and disabled people catching strays.” Another said: “All the people in the comments joking about this - i dont find it funny at all. I’m no Mitch McConnell girlie in the slightest but he’s had some serious health issues… Lets not joke about people’s health and scary situations like this.” It’s not the first time health concerns have been raised about McConnell. In March, the 81-year-old suffered a fall at a Washington DC hotel and was hospitalised due to concussion and a minor rib fracture. After undergoing rehab, he returned to Congress in April. Brits call for Sindy movie to rival Barbie
Brits call for Sindy movie to rival Barbie
The internet has been obsessed with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie for what seems like centuries now – but some people on social media have picked a rival team. Sindy was a British doll manufactured just four years later than her American counterpart. A little less glamorous and, perhaps, more realistic, Sindy still holds a place in the hearts of many in the UK. The toy even marks its 60th anniversary this year, after its original 1963 launch. Now, people are calling for the rivalry to get a reboot – and some even want a Sindy movie. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter One Twitter user said: “There should simultaneously be a slightly less polished and expensive Sindy movie.” Another said: “Despite all the hullabaloo this weekend, I wish to re-pledge my loyalty and devotion to the one true queen, #TeamSindy.” One person referenced the filmmaker Ken Loach, whose work has often focused on social issues prevalent in working class Britain, adding: “Looking forward to the Ken Loach directed film about Sindy.” It comes as Barbie celebrates the biggest opening weekend for a film by a female director, grossing $162m over its first three days. The obsession with the American toy has spread far and wide with people dressing up for the occasion and queueing around the block in many places to get a look at the movie on the opening night. And as Barbie-mania shows few signs of abating, it looks like Sindy has a bit of catching up to do. Have your say in our news democracy. Oppenheimer’s grandson claims there’s a ‘serious’ historical error with the film
Oppenheimer’s grandson claims there’s a ‘serious’ historical error with the film
Despite an impressive Rotten Tomatoes rating of 94 per cent and floods of gushing reviews, it seems Oppenheimer may contain a historical error. The real-life grandson of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist and the 'godfather of the atomic bomb', has spoken out about a "serious accusation" in the film towards his grandfather. Oppenheimer filmmaker Christopher Nolan based the script on the book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. It went on to win a Pulitzer Prize. Charles Oppenheimer acknowledged that he found himself "accepting and liking" the film, but called one detail inaccurate. "The part I like the least is this poison apple reference, which was a problem in American Prometheus," he told TIME. "If you read American Prometheus carefully enough, the authors say, 'We don't really know if it happened.'" He was referring to the scene at the start, in which Oppenheimer (played by Cillian Murphy) leaves a poisoned apple out and a visiting scientist nearly bites into it. "There's no record of him trying to kill somebody," he told the publication. "That's a really serious accusation and it's historical revision. There's not a single enemy or friend of Robert Oppenheimer who heard that during his life and considered it to be true." Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter It comes after cinema fanatics declare "the return of film" this summer with a string of hotly anticipated releases. In fact, Barbie and Oppenheimer performed so well at cinemas this weekend (21 July) across the UK that Vue International said they sold the most amount of tickets since the pandemic. Tim Richards, chief executive and founder of Vue International, said: “Vue saw its highest weekend admissions since Avengers: Endgame in 2019 with the release of Barbie and Oppenheimer, proving that when the movies are there our customers will come to watch them on the big screen. “Barbie is tracking to become the biggest film of 2023 and has a good chance of getting into the Top 10 highest-grossing films of all time. “It is an incredibly exciting moment for the industry, and we expect this trend to continue for the coming weeks.” Have your say in our news democracy. An entire neighbourhood of 35 houses is currently up being sold for just $7m
A bizarre Zillow listing has cropped up online, which reportedly shows a neighbourhood of 35 houses for sale. The listing was picked up by Sierra (@sierrakatherinee) who later shared her findings on TikTok. The description shared that all of the homes are "fully occupied" with "some under-valued rents and significant capital appreciation opportunity." Sierra went on to express her concerns for the families living in the neighbourhood. "I would just love for the people living in these 35 homes to have like support and resources from the city to be able to buy their homes, instead of their entire neighbourhood being for sale," she told viewers. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter The listing in Cobbs Creek, West Philidelphia was first shared on Compass last month and is worth just $7 million. The estate agent told Daily Dot: "Just a seller who owns 35 properties and he is selling them, across a couple of neighbourhoods." @sierrakatherinee My Spidey senses are tingling. What dk yall think about selling entire neighborhoods? #philadelphiarealestate #zillowfinds #philly #buytheblock The clip was soon flooded with comments from fellow TikTokers, hoping that an affluent person would snap the neighbourhood up and do a good deed. "This is a perfect opportunity for the Philly celebswho claim they’re for the community to make a huge difference," one person wrote, while another added: "Putting this energy out there: Some rich person should buy it & just sign the deeds over to those living in the homes right now." "If I had won that lotto I would have bought it then gave it back," a third added, to which Sierra responded: "I would love to do that for so many people and families!" Meanwhile, one TikToker expressed how, she too, felt "nervous" about one small detail. "Agree the "undervalue rents" makes me very nervous for the current residents," she wrote. Ben Shapiro hated Barbie so much he's made two more movies about it
Ben Shapiro hated Barbie so much he's made two more movies about it
By now you are probably aware that the Barbie movie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, has been a massive success at the box office, smashing all kinds of records and reducing men to nervous wrecks. Yes, the inevitable has happened where a pro-female movie has angered so many men that they just have to tell everyone about how much a movie about a doll upset them. We've had the likes of Piers Morgan and plenty of men on IMDB but one man who has made it his personal mission to tell the world how much he hated Barbie is Ben Shapiro. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter The outspoken conservative commentator first spoke out against Greta Gerwig's widely acclaimed film on Saturday in a 43-minute rant on YouTube where he called the film a "s**tshow" and one of the "worst movies ever." He also burned a Barbie and Ken doll. The 39-year-old, who mostly objected to the "smug" message of the film was promptly roasted for his scorching hot take and as a result felt compelled to make another video about how badly he was treated because of his views. In the second view shared on Tuesday, titled "Barbie Is Garbage, But You’re Not Allowed To Say So," Shapiro spent 20 minutes of a 1-hour video talking about the reaction to his reaction to the movie. Barbie Is Garbage, But You’re Not Allowed To Say So www.youtube.com At one point Shapiro said the reaction to him burning the Barbie dolls was similar to the reaction of someone burning a copy of the Quran in Sweden. Elsewhere he attacked Gerwig for promoting a new religious worldview and for the movie for pushing "left-wing propaganda." These are all valid points if you subscribe to Shapiro's politics but he wasn't done there. In a third video, Shapiro collaborated with a regular contributor of his and fellow conservative commentator Brett Cooper, who did enjoy the movie. This debate is for 30 minutes and if you enjoy this sort of format for a video then they both make valid point depending on how much you enjoyed the movie. Ben Shapiro and Brett Cooper Debate Barbie for 30 Minutes www.youtube.com At this point, Shapiro has spoken about Barbie for 93 minutes on YouTube and presumably longer elsewhere in edits that didn't make the cut. If he makes another 30 minute video on the film he'll have spoken about it longer than the actual length of Barbie, which is quite an achievement. That being said his original view of Barbie has been viewed more than 1.7 million times so something is clearly working for him. Have your say in our news democracy. Discontinued 'Allan dolls' selling for huge amounts on eBay after Barbie release
Michael Cera's Allan in Barbie has certainly made a mark, with resales of the discontinued doll reaching hundreds of dollars. In the film that broke records over the weekend, "Just Allan" plays a lonesome sidekick who instantly became a hit with viewers. One cinema-goer poignantly shared how Cera's character shows "how outnumbered the Allans of the world are. There was only one of him and thousands of Kens." TikToker Gigi continued: "I feel like that would be how it feels for a nice guy to live in this current world. The guy that is genuine but gets overlooked or questioned because his behaviours seem too good to be true, in a world that's outnumbered by Kens." Well now, Allan dolls are cropping back up years later after being discontinued, with thanks to Barbie no doubt. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter According to TMZ, most Allan dolls were retailing for around $35-$76 last week. Fast forward to this week, and some eBay listings are reaching at least $150. One is even selling at $500. Allan was first released as Ken's best friend back in 1964. His selling point was that he could fit into all of Ken's clothes, according to History. However, he was later discontinued with rumours that he and Ken appeared too close. Allan was later re-released, dropping one 'l' from his name as Alan, and reintroduced as Midge's husband (a pregnant Barbie doll) in the 90s. Cera has since opened up about his character, saying: "Allan is sort of like a person without a group that he belongs to, he’s kind of a loner, in a way." He continued: "I think the joke about that, at least how I interpret it, is that Allan the doll ... didn’t have a very successful run. [He’s] sort of this marginalised person in this world of Kens.” Have your say in our news democracy. 6 of the worst ever rebrands as Elon Musk changes Twitter logo to X
6 of the worst ever rebrands as Elon Musk changes Twitter logo to X
People aren't best pleased with Elon Musk after he changed the Twitter logo to 'X'. On Sunday, the billionaire said he was looking to change Twitter's logo, tweeting: "And soon we shall bid adieu to the Twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds." In doing so, he unleashed a wave of criticism, with marketing professor Jean-Pierre Dube telling the BBC he thought it was a joke, asking why anyone would "throw away" such a recognised brand as Twitter's. Musk is extending the rebrand though, with plans to change the office sign. If the rebrand flops, Musk won't be the first to make a mistake. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Indeed, here are some other rebrands that failed to capture the public. 1. Royal Mail In 2001, UK postal operator Royal Mail decided to change its name to Consignia to stop it being associated solely with sending and receiving parcels. The introduction of the new name alone cost £1.5 million but it went down very badly. After around a year, the company reverted to its original name. The re-rebranding to Royal Mail reportedly cost the company a further £1 million. 2. Mastercard In 2016 Mastercard changed its logo and people weren't keen. So much so that Mastercard later decided to only use this new logo on corporate worldwide communications, and opted to keep their existing brand image. 3. Gap In 2010, the American clothing retailer Gap changed its logo, causing an immediate social media backlash. This backlash was so intense that Gap reverted to its original logo within just one week. 4. Weight Watchers In 2019 Weight Watchers renamed itself Wellness and Wellbeing to be more body positive. The new rebrand didn’t go well, drastically impacting the company’s bottom line, with a stock market earnings of less than half. Following the change, they reported a loss of 600,000 members. 5. Hershey's In 2009, the sweet chocolate confections company Hershey’s decided to rebrand. Sadly, their new logo looked like a smoking poo so make of that what you will. 6. Leeds United In 2018 Leeds United changed its logo and it was so unpopular over 77,000 people signed a petition to boycott the rebrand, causing a PR nightmare. Chipotle restaurant hit with bad reviews after claims employee seduced women's husbands
A Florida branch of the Chipotle restaurant chain has been hit with a wave of negative reviews after claims an employee seduced multiple women’s husbands. An employee appearing to go by the name Lucy has apparently caused a stir after being named in several negative Yelp reviews of a Fort Myers, Florida, Chipotle restaurant. The reviewers all claim that Lucy has a tendency to seduce husbands and sleep with them and the scathing reviews were shared online. Twitter user @fiveeightshorty shared a screenshot of the Yelp reviews, writing: “Apparently there's some controversy at my local Chipotle.” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Three separate one-star reviews posted one month ago all mentioned the employee Lucy by name and insinuated she sleeps with married customers. One of the reviews read: “Stay far away. Lucy the GM or whatever position she is in-- she likes to sleep with married men AKA her customers.” Another reviewer also added, “The guac sucks too!!”, at the end of their review about Lucy’s alleged activities. The tweet has been viewed almost 12 million times and led to a whole host of jokes. One person wrote: “Let her cook!!” Another said: “Sounds like Lucy is great with customer service to me.” “Sounds like Lucy's guac brings all the boys to the Chipotle,” someone else wrote. Since the review went viral, the Yelp page has been flooded with some hilarious (likely fake) five-star reviews. One review said: “Lucy went above and beyond when handling my burrito. Vapes with parental locks could be used to verify user ages
E-cigarette company Juul is set to launch a new generation of vapes that has electronic age verification and parental locks. It comes after brands faced backlash for their products being enticing towards teens and children. Juul submitted their plans to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with a proposal to diminish underage usage and to encourage adult tobacco smokers to move over to vapes. They plan on using a mobile and web-based app to enable the verification technology, "including device-locking, and real-time product information and usage insights for age-verified consumers with industry-leading data-privacy protections." Juul plans on adding a larger, long-lasting battery with a smart light system that communicates battery life and liquid level. A unique pod ID chip to prevent fake Juul vapes will also be added. Additionally, plans suggest the newly designed Juul vapes will have an "innovative heating element that improves product performance and temperature-control precision". Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Juul’s Chief Product Officer Kirk Phelps said: "Our company DNA is product innovation." "With our next-generation platform, we have designed a technological solution for two public-health problems: improving adult-smoker switching from combustible cigarettes and restricting underage access to vapour products. "This is only the beginning of new tech being developed and refined for the U.S. market and abroad to eliminate combustible cigarettes and combat underage use." Chief Regulatory Officer Joe Murillo added: "Our next-generation vapour platform PMTA is built on new technology that advances public-health objectives and compelling science that demonstrates a clear public-health benefit, as required to secure a marketing authorization. We look forward to engaging with FDA throughout the review process while we pursue this important harm-reduction opportunity." The company's July submission is pending acceptance review.
