One of the biggest 'cities' ever on Earth was not built by humans
Scientists who were attempting to map an abandoned ant hill didn't expect to find a mega-city when they shot the hill full of cement, but that's exactly what they discovered. Over three days, scientists pumped 10 tons of cement into the empty ant hill to map its networks. After the cement dried, they dug for weeks around it. The excavation revealed an incredibly impressive, intricate, and bizarre ant mega-city. The mega-city was a truly colossal undertaking. A video revealed that the ants created the structure by displacing 40 tons of dirt. And it really is a mega-city. The ants networked to disposal pits and fungus gardens. Each tunnel was designed to ensure thorough ventilation and reduce transport time. The narrator disclosed the truth. That despite the complex nature of the mega-city, there was no single architect of any - but it was down to the collective will of the colony. "Everything looks like it has been designed by an architect a single mind but of course, that isn’t true," they said. "This colossal and complex city was created by the collective will of the ant colony, the super organism." The short resurfaced clip is from a much longer piece called Ants! Nature’s Secret Power. You can watch the full documentary here. Our city designers should take a few notes. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Sophie Turner fans support actor after 'reason for Joe Jonas divorce' is revealed
Amid the news of Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner's separation, many fans have jumped to the defence of Turner who worry she is becoming the victim of a PR "smear campaign". Separation rumours regarding the pair, who have been married for 4 years and have 2 children together, began surfacing this week after TMZ claimed to have a source saying the two were divorcing. Yesterday, according to papers obtained by the Associated Press, Jonas filed for divorce in Florida's Miami-Dad County Court on Tuesday citing their marriage being "irretrievably broken." The past weeks reports of reasons for their split were circulating, and all seemed to be in praise of Joe Jonas. On Sunday it was reported that Jonas was looking after their two children "pretty much all of the time". Yesterday it was claimed that "she likes to party, he likes to stay at home," as the reason for Jonas filing for divorce, despite previously interviews claiming the opposite. But fans have shown hesitation at the stories coming out about the couple, and believe a "smear campaign" against Turner is being purposefully pushed by framing her as a bad, inattentive mother and wife. One fan wrote "I love Joe Jonas as much as the next girlie [...] this is just a bad attempt at framing Sophie to be some careless mother and that's not it for me!!" Others said that Jonas wasn't home either due to being on tours: Whilst some say that whilst claims of him looking after his two children were supposed to paint him in a good light he is just "fulfilling his role as a father": On Wednesday the pair released a joint statement via Turner's Instagram, writing: "After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage. There are many speculative narrative as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children." Holly Willoughby and Alison Hammond smile awkwardly through NTA booing
The National Television Awards returned on Tuesday (5 September) for a night filled with the best of British TV. Attention soon turned to This Morning, which was dethroned after winning daytime, live magazine or topical magazine categories every year since 2011. The audience erupted into boos when the show was announced as hosts Holly Willoughby and Alison Hammond smiled on. It didn't take long for X/Twitter users to chime in with their (brutal) takes, with one writing: "It was amazing that the public showed This Morning how they felt and didn’t vote for them to win the best daytime show at the NTA’s this morning has run its course and should be scrapped." Another wrote: "Highlight of the Year - This Morning getting zilch." A third was delighted to not have to "endure Holly and Phil pretending to be drunk": Another wrote: "They lost to a programme named the Repair Shop. It’s so ironic it's hilarious." Willoughby later took to Instagram with a photo of herself with the show's host Jay Blades to congratulate his win. "To this gorgeous man @jaybladesmbe and the whole team at the @therepairshoptv … Hugest Congratulations!!! And what a night for the incredible Sarah Lancashire… @joeldommett thank you for a great night… See you in the morning," she wrote. On Wednesday's episode of This Morning, Willoughby sent her congratulations to the winners. She said: "A huge congratulations to The Repair Shop, well done you. Jay Blades, just like a special squeeze and lots of love to him. "He ran over to us, gave us all a big cuddle which I just thought was just class and gorgeous. I actually didn’t want to let go. Instagram model heavily criticised after posing in deadly forbidden cave
An influencer and Instagram model has faced a backlash online after posing for a series of photos inside a forbidden cave. Marina Rivera Saldaña posted pictures of herself modelling inside an area in the Canary Islands which is off-limits for visitors. The Spanish influencer has close to two million followers on Instagram, and some of the people viewing her recent shoot were not impressed to see her venture into the area. The location in question is the El Tancón cave in Santiago del Teide, Tenerife. Marina posted images of herself inside the idyllic-looking cave on September 1, adding the caption: “I’m a little mermaid from Makoo.” Despite the picturesque nature of the cave, it’s a dangerous place to visit and is off-limits to tourists. Six people have reportedly died after visiting the cave, according to reports. It’s been reported as a dangerous place to visit due to the strong and unpredictable currents caused by a rock formation that make response efforts so difficult. People in the comments section criticised her decision to pose for pictures in the cave, with one user commenting on the pictures: “I think it’s disrespectful that you’re bathing in a place that is FORBIDDEN.” “Bathing is forbidden there. We are sick of tourists that don’t respect our land,” another said. Another commented: “It seems to me a lack of respect that you are bathing in a place that is PROHIBITED, which is FENCED and has SIGNS POSED which prohibit bathing, and you enter because of the photos, and on top of that you publish it. Where you are, people have died, it is not an area suitable for bathing.” “I don’t understand why they skip all the security measures for a photo, unfortunate,” another added. Woman ditches drinks with her friend because she couldn't stand a crying baby
A woman walked out on drinks with her friend all thanks to a crying baby. Posting on Reddit, the woman explained that her and her friend, both aged 27, went to a brewery for happy hour drinks but was disturbed by a baby at the next table. "He [was] eating some mac and cheese and just yelling 'awawawa', over and over in the minute we were near the baby," she explained. She added: "He seemed happy, but I don't like babies yelling, crying, or really making noise. It really bothers me." So, she asked my friend if she wanted to move tables and told her she didn't want to be near a yelling baby. But the friend disagreed, and said "she thought the baby was cute and funny." They argued for a while and her friend said she was being "an asshole. So, she left. Reacting to her story, some people had her back. "I wouldn’t want to be near a screaming baby, either," one said. "You have choices and you made one." Another said: "It’s fine if you didn’t want to sit there. It’s fine that she didn’t want to move." But others thought she was in the wrong. "It’s a brewery, not a bar," one said. "Almost all breweries I’ve ever seen are family friendly." Another wrote: "Breweries that have restaurants and serve food, are for families too. They are not meant to be bars. If you don’t want children around, don’t go to a restaurant. Go to a club or a bar." What do you think? Fake Lizzo McDonald's meal attempts to body shame singer
A Lizzo "signature meal" at McDonald’s has been shared on social media – only, it’s completely fake, and circulated in an attempt to body shame the singer. The fake post features a picture of McDonald’s burgers, fries and nuggets, claiming to be a news report. The post states that the “New McDonald’s ‘Lizzo Meal’ is coming out”, before adding that the offer “Consists of 10 burgers, 95 nuggets & 6 Diet Cokes”. Claiming that all of the food in the post is Lizzo’s “daily meal”, which is a clear attempt to body shame the 35-year-old. The fake post comes in the aftermath of the allegations made against Lizzo this year. It was reported earlier this summer that Lizzo was being sued by former members of her dance troupe for sexual harassment and weight-shaming. The singer responded to the 44-page lawsuit on social media, telling fans that “there is nothing I take more seriously than the respect we deserve as women in the world”. She described the allegations as being “as unbelievable as they sound and too outrageous not to be addressed”. Meanwhile, in an interview recorded days before lawsuit allegations were made public, Lizzo hinted that something was making her 'sad', prompting speculation she knew the storm was coming. A pre-recorded 60 Minutes interview has been released, in which producers were totally unaware of what was to come. "Even today, I was having a rough day. I was sad and stuff earlier today", she told host Tom Steinfort. "And I still feel like for some reason, even if I'm having a bad day or I'm going through something, people still get good from it. Maybe I'm transmuting it or maybe I'm an alchemist." Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Gillian Keegan has officially become a meme for her hot mic moment
Tory MP and education secretary Gillian Keegan has become an instant meme after her hot mic outburst about what an amazing job she is allegedly doing. The incident occurred in the moments after an interview with ITV News while her microphone was still on. She was there to discuss the government’s handling of the RAAC scandal that has seen hundreds of schools close just before the start of the new term due to unsafe concrete that is prone to collapse being used in their buildings. At the end of the interview, Keegan asked the reporter: “Does anyone ever say, ‘You know what, you’ve done a f**king good job because everyone else has sat on their a**e and done nothing?’ No signs of that, no?” Despite apologising for her “off the cuff” sweary remark, Keegan has since found herself becoming a meme as people poke fun at her bigging herself up. The Trades Union Congress hilariously used the moment to encourage people to join unions if they feel underappreciated. They mocked: “Not appreciated at work? Join a union.” The Green Party also hit out at Keegan during her moment in the limelight, writing: “Just for the record, we don't think Gillian Keegan's done a ‘f***ing good job’.” A social media account run by the Labour Party also mocked Keegan’s Department for Education for its updated claim that most schools are “unaffected”. In an edited version of the department’s update, they changed the text to read: “Most beachgoers not eaten by big shark.” Keegan was forced to defend her decision to go on holiday shortly before the concern over RAAC was made public. Teenager dies after taking part in 'One Chip Challenge'
A teenager has died after taking part in the concerning “One Chip Challenge” that has spread on social media. 14-year-old Massachusetts teen Harris Wolobah died after consuming an incredibly spicy Paqui Tortilla chip and developing a severe stomach ache at school. The consumption of the chip is part of the viral One Chip Challenge that tests people to see how long they can last without having to take a sip of water or eat anything else to relieve them from the spiciness. It is a challenge that is popular on social media as people film their reactions to eating the spicy tortilla chip. Wolobah’s parents believe that taking part in the challenge contributed to their son’s sudden and unexplained death, according to reports. The teenager’s bereaved mother explained that her son had been picked up from school after feeling unwell. He began to feel better at home but was later found unconscious as he was about to leave to play basketball. Wolobah was rushed to hospital and was pronounced dead. His cause of death is not yet known as his family awaits autopsy results. Speaking to local news, the teenager’s mother said she believes her child died due to complications from participating in the Paqui One Chip Challenge. The company’s website warns users to seek “medical assistance” if they experience “difficulty breathing, fainting or extended nausea”. It also advises the chip is meant for adult consumption. Disney 'investigating' footage that shows employees 'twerking' while dressed as characters
Disney is reportedly investigating footage that appears to show staff twerking while dressed in their family-friendly character uniform. In a viral video shared to a TikTok account called 'Illegal Disney,' the famed dog Pluto was spotted provocatively dancing to the popular audio that sings: "Here comes the hurricane b****". Another clip shows behind-the-scenes footage of the character heads in the dressing room. "Warning! Will ruin Disney magic. Disney backstage," the caption read. It has since been reported that Disney seniors are fuming about the clips. A source told The Sun that while it "looks silly," it is "absolutely paramount" to protect the integrity of the characters. "They’ve asked top investigators to shut down the feed and try to identify those responsible, who are in breach of their employment contracts," they continued. "They’re one of the most protective companies in the world because they know their biggest customers are young children who don’t want the illusion shattered. "Some of the clips show the characters dancing and twerking in their outfits — it’s just not on-message." @illegal.disney #disneyillegal #disney #fyp #viral It comes after a NSFW X/Twitter account posing as Disney Junior was verified earlier this year, sparking outrage on the platform. Elon Musk's blue tick subscription model meant anyone could gain verification if they paid per month. The owner of the profile was seemingly stunned by their newfound tick status. "No f**king way," they tweeted under the username @DisneyJuniorUK after spotting the gold badge – proof enough that this wasn't an account for kids. Indy100 reached out to Disney for comment. The MrBeast and Jacksepticeye drama explained
Two of the biggest names in YouTube have been feuding, with viewers surprised to see there was beef between MrBeast and Jacksepticeye. It comes following the circulation of a clip on social media, which saw Jacksepticeye asked questions about his fellow YouTuber. The footage shows the Irish 33-year-old hooked up to a lie detector, while giving his honest opinions on MrBeast – the biggest name on the video streaming platform. When asked about his content, Jacksepticeye said that MrBeast "ruined YouTube" because he made videos which were all about "views, money, and popularity." TommyInnit also appears in the video, and when he asked if MrBeast ruined YouTube, Jacksepticeye replied: “Yes. Because it became more about views, money, and popularity than it did about having fun. If he had fun doing those videos, they'd be longer. We'd see the fun." The clip quickly went viral, and MrBeast replied to him by taking issue with his comments. "So, I, 'ruined YouTube' because I didn’t buy a mansion and sports cars and instead reinvested my $ into making content/ocused on doing good and inspiring kids to help people?" he wrote on Twitter. "'If he had fun the videos would be longer.' What does that even mean, lol? You think I’d give up every hour of my life for 14 years if I didn’t have fun?” He went on to say: "This clip is insanely disrespectful IMO (in my opinion) and obviously there is so much I could say about his content but I’ll just take the punches and be the bigger man. Sigh." The disagreement understandably raised a lot of eyebrows among fans, but it now looks like the pair have managed to patch things up. They both posted on Twitter, with an exchange that seemed to suggest they’d been chatting privately and were no longer unhappy with each other. MrBeast posted a smiling emoji and said: “We messaged, we’re Gucci now”, followed by a smiling emoji. Jacksepticeye then replied to the message with a cowboy and thumbs-up emoji.
