Twitter users are still reeling from the platform’s abrupt branding change to "X". The social media app changed its branding on Monday morning after scarcely a day’s notice, with many mocking the new look of the platform. Channel 4 got in there early by reminding Elon Musk, Twitter’s owner, of the time they tried to launch a major rebrand – and it didn’t quite stick. The broadcaster’s social media account posted: “People still call our streaming service 4OD so good luck”. Eventually, however, network executives decided it was time to fix something that definitely was not broken, rebranding the service as All 4. The moniker clearly didn’t stick. Twitter executives will hope they have a little more success with their change. Meanwhile, billionaire Elon Musk has already faced significant criticism for the way he has handled the company since taking it over last year. He fired 80 per cent of the tech company’s staff last year, many finding out in brutal circumstances by opening their laptops and discovering they no longer had a job when the machine would not log them in anymore. The result, many commentators have agreed, is a degraded product, with major glitches including all links to external websites temporarily failing, and day-long caps on how many tweets users can look at. Musk has also restored the accounts of thousands of previously suspended users, including neo-Nazi and QAnon accounts. A woman's 10-year mystery illness turned out to be a result of mould in her breast implants. Melissa Lima, the ex-wife of the late baseball player Jose Lima, turned to TikTok with her harrowing story to spread awareness of breast implant illness (BII). Symptoms of BII include, but are not limited to, "fatigue, problems with memory or concentration ('brain fog'), joint and muscle pain, hair loss, weight changes, and anxiety/depression," according to the FDA. Captioned "this is your sign", Lima opened up about how her body insecurities prompted her to get a breast augmentation in 2002 in a TikTok post. The viral clip, which has racked up 5.3 million views, showed a montage of Lima's swollen face and ankles. "After 100's of doctors and still no answer, I just gave up," she added. People online have recently been mortified to learn that some beers contain a product derived from fish bladders. Some breweries use isinglass, which is a gelatine-like substance from drying and processing certain fish bladders. It is part of the flocculation process to alter the colour of the beer. Explaining the technicalities, Craft Beer & Brewing said: "Isinglass is a traditional finings, a substance that causes yeast to precipitate out of suspension, leaving beer clear. Isinglass is derived from the swim bladders of certain tropical and subtropical fish. "When macerated and dissolved for several weeks in dilute food-grade acids, they form a turbid, colourless, viscous solution largely made up of the protein collagen. This material is known to brewers as isinglass finings." "The use of isinglass has declined and today it is largely confined to cask-conditioned ales," Beer & Brewing explained. "Although some American craft brewers also use it to clarify beer without the use of filtration." Guinness famously altered their recipe after 256 years to become vegan-friendly. In 2016, a spokesperson told The Times: "Whilst isinglass is a very effective means of clarification, and has been used for many years, we expect to stop using it as the new filtration asset is introduced." Of course, the use of the substance makes some beers not suitable for vegans. But, in the meantime, there are plenty of alternatives that don't contain the fish product including Heineken, Peroni, Birra Moretti and Camden Hells. Elon Musk is making another big change to Twitter and this one might be the most significant yet - its name. The latest alteration the South African billionaire is making to the site, which he payed $44 billion for in 2022 is to rebrand it as 'X.' No, that's not a typo or a placeholder for a name we've forgot to put in, that's literally what Musk is planning to call Twitter from now on. It follows in Musk's long-standing obsession with the word (Space X, Tesla Model X his own child X Æ A-12) having already brought the X.com domain name which just redirects you to Twitter. Gen Z finance expert Hannah Williams wants us all to talk openly about our salary
From entering the workforce to managing finances, navigating adulthood after leaving education is the life stage many Zoomers have reached. Social media platforms such as TikTok mean that this generation feels more confident to discuss work culture and practices which has led to a number of viral work trends such as job hopping and salary transparency. A familiar face that may have graced your For You page about these important topics is Gen Z finance expert Hannah Williams. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter With over 1.2m followers on TikTok, the 26-year-old is the creator and CEO of the company Salary Transparent Street, with “a mission to create more financial transparency and close income disparities; particularly for women, people of colour and other minorities.” Some of the most viral videos on Williams’s TikTok page are of her approaching members of the public on the street and asking them about their occupation and salary. A question some might consider uncomfortable since 29 per cent of workers report they would only feel comfortable discussing salary at work with close, friendly co-workers, according to Zippia who surveyed 1,438 American workers. This career path wasn’t exactly the plan for Williams who noted there are a “lot of twists and turns on how [she] got here,” it all began when she accepted a new job as a senior data analyst with a $90,000 salary, believing it to be a fair offer for the role. “I didn't even negotiate my salary,” Williams told indy100. “I just accepted the first offer they gave me. I didn't have any fuss about it and I thought I was making really good money.” This in turn, along with feeling “super burnt out” in the role, encouraged the then-23-year-old to do some market research and after going “six pages deep” in Google searching ‘how much should a senior data analyst make in Washington DC’, Williams realised she had been underpaid about $20,000 to $25,000. “I had vastly undervalued myself when I accepted the job offer that they gave me,” she said, and so put her research findings to the company, but they refused to give her the raise she wanted. “So in that moment, I realised not having paid transparency and not knowing what people make had cost me $20,000,” she said and had to go find a new job. Williams is not alone in her experience as a Glassdoor study in 2016 found that 68 per cent of women accept the salary they’re offered and don’t negotiate at all, compared to 52 per cent of men. When Williams found herself at a job interview, she approached the salary expectations question differently, with confidence in her value and skills. “So I flipped it on her and I was like ‘I know what my market rate is, but I just want to make sure that your budget is in line with my expectations. Do you mind sharing the budget with me?’” In response, the recruiter explained that their budget is $115,000 in line with the market rate, and so when Williams was later offered the job with this salary she accepted – though she couldn’t help but think back to her experience of being undervalued in her previous position. “I accepted and that entire experience got me $25,000 more but also cost me $25,000,” Williams noted. “And so I couldn't really shake what had happened to me and I was like more people need to be talking about this because like I fix my situation, but I also could have been stuck there, and how do we fix this?” That is when she created a TikTok account and posted a video sharing how much she made in every single job from the five jobs she job-hopped from and it soon racked up the views. “I know there's a problem here. People are really interested in this [or] it wouldn't have gone viral. If people weren't curious,” Williams added and then asked herself: “How do I take this a step further?” Williams decided “I'm gonna go on the street,” and improve pay transparency from the grassroots. Upon going viral, Williams continued to post popular content over the course of a “very insane” three weeks and then proceeded to quit her job to become a full-time creator, calling the decision a “no-brainer.” “This is a huge opportunity… it's my moment and I have to take the risk and I also I didn't have too much to lose,” she said, after all at the time she was 25 with no kids and had savings behind her. “So really everything aligned for me to take that risk. And for me, the thing that I've always wanted is to have an impact in my job and to feel like I actually am making a change and that's exactly what that was.” Since starting Salary Transparent Street, Williams has travelled all over the country from Washington D.C., New York, Oregon, Chicago, Indiana and more as well as to Canada to find out what people are earning in their jobs. When speaking to Williams, she had just arrived back from filming in Eugene, Oregon and also visited Corvallis, Salem and Portland in what has been her “favourite trip,” so far. “I guess like the reason why it was the best is just because people were very open and friendly and willing to share,” she said. Out of the 35 interviews they filmed in Oregon, Williams believes just five to six people declined to talk to her. Something that isn’t always the case, particularly when visiting New York as the CEO described how despite the city being “a dream for us because of foot traffic.” “It's our least successful trip, every single time we go to New York because people do not want to stop and talk to you. They see you, you know with a camera and a mic and they're like, ‘Absolutely not. Given the number of people she has spoken to, Williams also detailed some patterns she has noticed in terms of demographics. People below the age of 40 are more likely to share information about their salary than anyone above this age. This reflects a Bankrate.com survey where 42 per cent of Gen Z workers, ages 18-25, and 40 per cent of millennial employees, ages 26-41, have shared their salary information with a coworker or other professional contact. Meanwhile, women are more likely to share than men, according to Williams. White people are more likely to share than any other ethnicity. “It’s really interesting how those demographics play out in terms of like, what people culturally believe what they've been brought up to believe all of that plays out,” Williams commented. When looking at earnings in different job sectors, healthcare, tech trades and entrepreneurs are among the highest earners in comparison to social services, like teachers, Metro workers, and bus workers who are some of the lowest earners. “We're not seeing people getting compensated based on how important they are to our society,” Williams said noting this as being one of “the effects of capitalism,” and part of a “ tough conversation about whether or not it should be that way” and what we can do to change it. While some remain hesitant to share their salary publicly, others who do appear in videos sign a form beforehand to get permission to post the video. However, occasionally participants reach out to Williams after-the-fact to request to get the video taken down as their work has discovered the clip. “I try to remind them it's your legal right to talk about your salary, especially if you are a private employee,” she said. Williams added that she tries to “help them out as much as [she] can so they don't get in trouble with their companies,” who use “intimidation because of greed.” Responses to Williams’s videos clearly show more people are open to having these conversations – and that’s exactly the feedback she has received in her direct messages too. “It's been so overwhelmingly positive basically every single day I get a DM on one of our platforms saying ‘thank you for talking about this, you gave me the courage to have to ask for what I'm here to negotiate my salary.’” “We've definitely helped people make millions of dollars more than they were making previously,” the creator added. Being able to reach millions of people online is something Williams credits TikTok for, and recently wrote a Teen Vogue op-ed in defence of the app, amid talk of it being banned. The app’s ability to push Salary Transparent Street, videos onto people’s For You pages – even those who don’t follow the account – means more people have access to this key financial information. “What's beautiful has been the ability that our videos have had with reach and how many people have seen them,” Williams said, as it has given viewers the confidence to start talking about pay with their friends, their family and at work. “TikTok has been fundamental with that effect.” Such is the impact, that Williams was invited to testify in a public hearing in support of the Pay Range Act. “I represent Gen Z and workers you know, who aren't experts in this field. But we have something to say because we're the most impacted by pay transparency,” she said. “So I think me going and speaking and having a spot in the legislation process says a lot about the power that you can have on social media, but also responsibility and making sure I fulfil my end of that.” True to her word about salary transparency, Williams broke down her earnings as the CEO and creator of Salary Transparent Street and the structure of the company which has seen a “slow, steady and safe,” growth. “I made $200,000 that's my annual salary that I've set. My fiancé [Daniels] who's also our cameraman, he makes $65,000. “Then I have an executive assistant and she makes $80,000 a year and it's just the three of us full time and then I work with a lot of people part-time on like a freelance basis,” she explained. Running a company and being in charge of the social media means for Williams the biggest challenges are “burnout and self-care.” “I read every single comment that we get and I blog people I report comments, you know, I engage I, I comment and so it's a lot of constantly being online.” She also noted how it’s “very difficult to deal with internet trolls,” and “hard to be exposed to it 24/7,” therefore self-care is essential and something she has had to navigate. One of the main focuses for Salary Transparent Street is the creation of a new revolutionary database which will allow users to share and receive unparalleled access to real-time salary information from over 5,000 users across the country. “It's live right now, but it's in this really ugly Google Spreadsheet, so we're turning it into this really beautiful product that is searchable and filterable.” From personal experience, Williams struggled with her research to find the market rate for her job at the time. “If you ‘search data analyst in Washington DC’, it spits back like one number, which is an average of all the data they have and then a minimum and a maximum. So it's the aggregation is not helpful there.” She added: “The whole point of it is you can find the salary that you relate to most closely based on your own experience. “To see how you can compare and also you can see what other people are making in different companies if you want to work there specifically to make sure that you're not going to get undervalued when it comes down to getting the offer.” The CEO hopes this data will be “really valuable” to the community for them to use it as another source of market research and a source of data for them to use “to make sure they know what they're worth.” With this project well underway, and continuing to reach people with her videos, Williams is enthusiastic about what the future holds for Salary Transparent Street and has an ambition to film her on-the-street videos in different countries in Europe and Asia. Salary transparency is a global issue, for example in the UK a majority (61 per cent) of Brits feel they are not paid fairly at work, but just a quarter (24 per cent) will ask their employer for a raise in 2023, research by 1st Formations found when 2,100 UK adults were polled. “We're just going to continue creating even better content growing on what we have now and really delivering to what our community needs are, which is more education, more information and more resources to help them advocate for themselves,” Williams concluded. Greta Gerwig's critically lauded and box-office-smashing movie was released worldwide on Friday with seemingly everyone heading out to see the Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling starring comedy about the iconic toy. However, it's not all been harmonious laughs and giggles for everyone - just ask Reddit user u/Salty-Village299 whose decision to take just one of her daughters to see the film has caused all sorts of stress and trouble for her. The Barbie movie was released on Kayla's 11th birthday so she was taken to the cinema to see it as a treat by her aunt, which she claims was arranged by her brother days in advance. However, Violet's mother found out about this plan and demanded that the aunt also take her daughter because she "loves Barbie." The aunt said this was fine but wanted the mother to come along too. She continues: "I said that she and Violet are welcome to tag along and she said no, she's not coming, only Violet. I gently said no because respectfully I want to relax on my day off work and enjoy the movie and I don't feel like watching Violet. Not only is she younger and less independent but she's autistic and can be quite a handful (I didn't say this to Emma but she knows). "I could see Emma was getting annoyed and she said I'd only be watching Violet during the movie and its only such a small ask. I told her no and that's that. She said I'm excluding Violet for no reason and that I'm playing favorites, and I don't have to deal with Violet being sad that she can't go see the movie with us, but said I obviously don't care because I'm so selfish." The accusations "upset" the aunt who was also accused of not wanting to babysit Violet despite always being happy to do activities with Kayla. The rest of her family have since gotten involved with her brother telling his other sister that she should take "her own daughter to the movies with us and pay for their own tickets." She adds: "This all snowballed into a massive family rift as my parents got involved too and said that Emma has every right to be upset and I should just bring Violet and that it would make Violet really happy. "I ended up only taking Kayla and she had a blast but this situation has gotten me feeling so crap and I just need to know if I really was right or wrong." Want to enrage a bunch of angry men on the internet? Just make an incredibly popular film with a strong feminist message. It works like a charm. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has done just that. As most people queued around the block decked out in pink feather boas and sunglasses this weekend, the keyboard warriors took a different approach: hate-watching the film of the summer then slating it online. So here are some hilarious reviews of a totally harmless movie. And before you read on: SPOILER ALERT! Blogger Jim Schembri wrote on Rotten Tomatoes: “For the first 30 minutes or so Barbie is a fun, feather-weight satire...Then the stuff about patriarchy kicks in and the film turns into a thinly disguised #metoo rant, trading comedy for man-bashing and a lot of confused point-scoring about sexism.” Meanwhile, Christian Toto wrote on the same platform: “Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling can't save story captured by man-hating agenda.” Comedy writer Aaron Gillies, who posts on Twitter under the pseudonym @TechnicallyRon, took some similar reviews from Letterboxd and put them on the movie poster. Turn over to IMDB, and it’s much the same. One account, nhsiposm, denounced the film’s “radical views” and called it “an extended radical feminist diatribe packaged within the guise of a fun summer blockbuster.” Meanwhile, pat-394 said it was “a shameful piece of cinema, unless you're of a certain ideological bent, in which case you'll love it. For everyone else: Avoid like the plague.” And finally, we have to give a little bit of credit to jasonburnscorp for coming up with the headline: “Barbage”. That’s nice. He goes on: “Though initially pretty in detail, this junk box Frankenstein of a film quickly turned into a radical feminist fair, mixed with corporate propaganda. Amongst Koung's bizarre content for the soldiers includes strip-teases to air-raid sirens, 'free emotional breastfeeding to soldiers and volunteers' and posing in her underwear with weapons such as rocket launchers. However, all the money she earns from her output goes to humanitarian resources with income also going to other volunteers and towards Ukrainians themselves. Speaking to The Daily Beast, the 2015 Miss Taiwanese American Pageant competitor arrived in Ukraine in Novemeber, initially to help out as a volunteer to help refugees as well as working in women's shelters and orphanages in Lviv. The 33-year-old added: "People don’t talk about the sexual needs of the people of country at war. Think about the one part of you that needs to have a person you can confide in. I try to do that for anyone who speaks English, or Ukrainian at a 3-year-old level.” However, her support hasn't been warmly received by everyone. Koung revealed that she has received backlash from some fellow Western volunteers in a group chat who accused her of "making porn of off mass graves." Koung, who now refers to herself as a "sex tourist" added that she has "lost about 5,000 followers since this whole Ukraine thing. Because I went from being a sexy influencer to a sexy influencer who won’t stop talking about Ukraine.” Overall she admits that she prefers Ukrainian men to Americans as: "they [Ukrainians] treat me like an infant. Sunak has yet to confirm whether he did get to see Oppenheimer second or whether they'll return to the cinema for a second outing for a far more serious and devastating film. While this is mostly wholesome fun for the family, people couldn't help but wonder how Oppenheimer would hit for a person that actually has access to nuclear weapons. Bizarrely, Andrew Tate of all people weighed into things and told Sunak to "fix the country" which isn't really in the spirit of things. Still, we won't begrudge a man going to the cinema with his family but we'll have to wait and see what he thought of both movies. Hopefully, it'll get brought up at the next PMQs session. AI has created a 'Barbenheimer' trailer that fans are calling a 'masterpiece'
If you've spent any time on the internet in the past few weeks you'll be very aware that there is a craze called Barbenheimer which revolves around the release of two movies; Barbie and Oppenheimer. The trend revolves around the fact that the films directed by Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan respectively, were released on the exact same day despite appearing to be polar opposites both in terms of aesthetics and messages. That being said the trend has actually helped both movies become box office successes in their own rights as both titles have reportedly over exceeded expectations. Well, wonder no longer because the YouTube channel Curious Refuge has used AI to imagine what a film starring Barbie as a nuclear scientist would actually look like. The trailer has the tone of the two films almost nailed down and features AI rendings of actors from the actual films such as Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Matt Damon, Cillian Murphy and Will Ferrell as well as a few ringers like Brad Pitt and Timothee Chalamet. The video has already been viewed more than 88,000 times and many fans are loving it. One person wrote: "What a masterpiece." Another said: "We truly live in the best timeline." A third wrote: "We needed this. And we received it!" A fourth added: "This is not the cross-over that we need, this is the cross-over that we deserve." The outspoken conservative commentator Ben Shapiro has called Greta Gerwig's widely praised Barbie movie "horrific" and one of the worst films he's ever seen. The 39-year-old, who has previously criticised the likes of Glass Onion and The Last of Us, did not hold back on the critically praised film, which he "s**tshow" and accused it of using up all of its jokes within the first 40 seconds of the film. He did find time to praise the production design and costumes in the film but used the majority of his 43 YouTube review to berate the messaging of the movie which he feels fails the intended audience of mothers and young girls. Without actually saying which of the two blockbusters he prefers, he instead proceeds to torch a Barbie and Ken doll in a nearby bin, thus telling us he thought Oppenheimer was better. On Twitter on Friday, Shapiro has hinted that he didn't like Barbie by writing: "My producers dragged me to see ‘Barbie’ and it was one of the most woke movies I have ever seen." Shapiro's mini-review of Barbie was soon mocked, which is a frequent occurrence whenever he voiced his contrary opinion on any cultural matter. YouTuber and streaming star iShowSpeed has found himself converted to being a Lionel Messi fan after witnessing the Argentinian legend score a stunning goal on his Inter Miami debut. Messi made his debut for his new club on Friday night in the Leagues Cup against Mexican side Cruz Azul. Although Messi didn't start the game he did come on shortly into the second half and by the end of the game he had grabbed all the headlines thanks to an unbelievable free kick on the 94th minute to give Miami a 2-1 win. It was a star-studded affair at the DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with David Beckham (the club's owner), Victoria Beckham, Serena Williams and Kim Kardashian in attendance. The 18-year-old online personality has amongst many things, made a name for himself for being an outspoken Cristiano Ronaldo fan. He even met the Portuguese icon earlier this year during an emotional encounter. Speed happened to be in attendance for the match and in a clip doing the rounds on social media, he was seen saying that if Messi scored the freekick he would become a fan of the footballer. Sure enough, Messi did score leaving Speed completely speechless but he was at least prepared. Speed, who was wearing a Portugal shirt with Ronaldo printed on it, removed the garment to show an Inter Miami shirt underneath with Messi on the back - Speed clearly had some hindsight into the occasion. 36-year-old Messi has signed a two-and-a-half year contract with Miami which will likely be the last club he plays for during his illustrious career.
