Controversial podcaster Joe Rogan - who’s previously made headlines for spreading “racist myths about Jews”, suggesting we should “just shoot” homeless people, and saying it’s not “wise” to take away weapons from gun owners – has now caused TikTok users to create videos about a climate crisis conspiracy theory. Based upon a bogus book from 1965 by Chan Thomas called The Adam and Eve Story: The History of Cataclysms, the baseless theory pertains to the shifting of Earth’s magnetic poles, and was brought up in an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience on 18 January. “Researcher” and YouTuber Jimmy Corsetti told Rogan: “The theory on that is that it happens in cycles of 6,500 years and that it’s a 90-degree flip, but six days later, around the seventh day, it corrects itself. “Because of [the flip] the Earth essentially does a standstill, the sun will be direct – will basically stay in the same spot, causing heating like we’ve never experienced … - so the theory is that when that event happens it’s going to be cataclysmic.” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Except, it’s a load of nonsense, with Nasa research scientist Martin Mlynczak telling The Verge: “There’s no proof and no science and no physics behind any of the claims about the magnetic field change being associated with climate change. “[It] is total bogus. If that’s what happened every 6,500 years, we would certainly see it; it would be in all the records. “The amount of energy to bring that about is tremendous, and you know, there’s nothing to initiate it.” According to the American non-profit Media Matters, seven TikTok videos between January and April were spotted containing clips from Rogan’s podcast discussing the conspiracy theory, with one video posted just last month clocking up over 14.6m views. In a statement to The Verge, Corsetti said: “Keep in mind that those various TikTok clips are edited portions of my conversation on the Joe Rogan Podcast where I am explaining the difference between ‘mainstream scientific view’ of pole shifts, in comparison to the Adam and Eve Story - which is certainly not considered accepted science.” Glad that’s cleared up. Scientists have revealed the shocking impact of consuming ultra-processed foods in a short space of time. Two twin sisters were asked to switch up their diets as a part of a King's College London experiment for BBC Panorama. Aimee, 24, spent two weeks eating ultra-processed foods, while her sister Nancy was asked to consume the same amount of calories – but exclusively eating raw or low-processed foods. The results revealed that Aimee gained almost a kilo in weight, while her sister lost weight. The test also showed a difference in blood sugar and blood fat levels, with Aimee's worsening. So, what are ultra-processed foods? Some foods are considered "ultra-processed" under the NOVA food classification system developed by University of São Paulo researchers. They typically have five or more ingredients. The other three categories are unprocessed or minimally processed foods, processed ingredients and processed foods. "They tend to include many additives and ingredients that are not typically used in home cooking, such as preservatives, emulsifiers, sweeteners, and artificial colours and flavours. These foods generally have a long shelf life," writes British Heart Foundation (BHF). Foods include ham, sausages, crisps, ice cream, mass-produced bread, carbonated drinks, instant soups – and even some alcoholic beverages such as whiskey, gin and rum. The BHF encourages people to swap out to make conscious choices, such as swapping out flavoured yoghurts for plain and adding fresh fruit. Instead of buying pre-made sauces, they suggest making your own and freezing the extra portions for another day. Porridge with fruits and nuts also makes a great alternative to sugar-filled breakfast cereals. "In the last decade, the evidence has been slowly growing that ultra-processed food is harmful for us in ways we hadn't thought," Professor Tim Spector of epidemiology told BBC Panorama. "We're talking about a whole variety of cancers, heart disease, strokes, dementia." BHF Senior Dietitian Victoria Taylor said: "We already recommend people adopt a Mediterranean-style diet, which includes plenty of minimally or unprocessed foods such as fruit, vegetables, fish, nuts and seeds, beans, lentils and whole grains. A woman who noticed her food and drink was being stolen by her flatmates has revealed the lengths she took to get her own back. TikToker Sarah (@saatj32) opened up about the drastic measures she was forced to take, explaining in a video: "I had to poison my food because my flatmates kept stealing it." She then shared a recording of herself carrying out the act: opening a carton of organic British skimmed milk and pouring in the contents of a salt container. A sonic boom in Washington DC caused by a jet has sparked a whole host of conspiracy theories about its origins, including aliens. On Sunday (4 June), US fighter jets pursued a light aircraft that illegally entered airspace over Washington DC. The Cessna Citation light aircraft was unresponsive, leading to the authorities scrambling jets to intercept it. The aircraft proceeded to crash into a mountainous area in southwest Virginia – authorities say the crash was not caused by the fighter jets. According to CNN, there were four people onboard and police said rescuers found no survivors. A sonic boom is a loud explosive noise that is caused by an object travelling faster than the speed of sound. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (Norad) said in a statement: “The Norad aircraft were authorized to travel at supersonic speeds and a sonic boom may have been heard by residents of the region.” But, for some, it appears the explanation was insufficient as they proceeded to speculate about other conspiracies. Someone questioned: “Based on the size of the area reporting the violent shake, this is an absolute lie. I want evidence.” The plane that crashed and sparked the scrambling of fighter jets was registered to a Florida-based company run by John Rumpel. A woman was left raging after claiming an Airbnb tenant refused to leave her home. In a furious explicit-filled rant reposted to the @2RawTooReal Twitter account, the woman urged people to "trust no f***ing Airbnbs," alleging that her temporary house guest wouldn't leave – despite getting the police involved. She explained how she posted an advertisement on the popular rental website to help with the mortgage while she was on holiday. The guest was supposed to be gone three days before she arrived home. In a follow-up video, she filmed the unidentified (and unwelcome) lodger who brutally hit back: "I ain't going nowhere. Deal with it." After the homeowner accused the stranger of being a "freeloader", she replied furiously: "Call the police because I ain't going nowhere. Don't touch that [bedroom] door, or I'm calling the police on you. They're gonna arrest you." The would be tenant proceeded to make herself comfortable and even went as far as lighting a cigarette in the homeowner's dining area. An Australian pub has issued a public apology after its attempt at a light-hearted promo campaign went down like a pint of warm beer. The Woolshed on Hindley, in Adelaide, offered punters free drinks in exchange for their bras, telling them: “The bigger, the better.” In a now-deleted Facebook ad, customers were instructed to “hang your bra in the shed” in order to bag themselves a beverage – and the larger the cup size, the larger the reward. According to the online poster, an A cup would get you one free drink, a B cup would get you two and a C cup would get you three. Social media was soon flooded with angry comments about the “misogynistic” and “offensive” campaign. On Sunday, the Woolshed published a grovelling message expressing its remorse for the misguided idea.
