Plane passengers refunded £1,143 due to farting dog
A couple on a 13-hour flight were refunded over £1,000 after being seated next to a farting dog. Gill and Warren Press were travelling from Paris to New Zealand with Singapore Airlines when an emotional support dog started snoring loudly during the first leg of their trip. "I heard this noise – a heavy snorting," Gill told Stuff. "I thought it was my husband’s phone, but we looked down and realised it was the dog breathing. I said, ‘I’m not having this sitting next to us the whole trip." They also claimed the dog wouldn't stop farting during the journey. It was then the couple alerted staff and asked to move, but there were no spaces available. "They couldn’t have the dog out in the aisle because they couldn’t get the trolleys through, so it had to come in further, which meant his head was under my husband’s feet," she continued. "My husband was in shorts and was getting the dog’s saliva goo on his leg." The pair were offered $116 in travel vouchers – which they were unhappy with. They pushed for a refund and have since been given approximately $1,410 which they plan on donating to a charity for guide dogs. A spokesperson for Singapore Airlines said: "Singapore Airlines (SIA) apologises to Mr and Mrs Press for their experience on board their flight from Paris to Singapore. "SIA endeavours to notify customers who may be seated next to an assistance dog prior to boarding. In circumstances where customers seated next to an assistance dog request to be moved, we will assist to re-seat customers within the same cabin if space permits. "In this instance, we were unable to move Mr and Mrs Press within the same cabin as the Premium Economy Class cabin was full. Our crew offered to move Mr and Mrs Press to two empty seats in Economy Class, which they accepted after take-off." Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. People are launching baby puffins off cliffs in Iceland – here's why
Social media users were shocked to find out that people in Iceland are throwing baby puffins off cliffs – and they have been doing it for decades. Residents of several Icelandic towns traditionally go out looking for baby Atlantic puffins, or pufflings, through late August and September, explained TikTok user Jenn, whose handle is @thatgoodnewsgirl. It isn’t as bad as it sounds though. The practice has become vital to the survival of the species, according to experts, as pufflings have increasingly become confused by the bright lights of towns like Vestmannaeyjabaer in the Westman Islands. Where they would naturally find their way from their hatch site to the sea using the light of the moon, they now often wander into brightly lit towns which are much more dangerous than their natural habitat. As a result, residents now have a yearly tradition of going out to find the pufflings at night, keeping them safe overnight in cardboard boxes before chucking them off the cliffs the next morning. Crucially, the pufflings can already fly, and flap out towards the sea to rejoin their colonies. One commenter said: “I was concerned at first, glad there was a happy explanation.” Another added: “I was about to get super upset and it turned into the most wholesome story.” @thatgoodnewsgirl People are tossing baby puffins off cliffs and shorelines in Iceland - and it’s for their own good! These people are on Puffling Patrol and they’re saving the baby puffins one by one ❤️ I first learned about the Puffling Patrol because many of you tagged me in a video by @Kyana Sue Powers • Iceland, and then I went down a rabbit hole learning more about it! She posts about all things Iceland if you’re interested in more. 🇮🇸 🎥 CBC News / Nat Geo TV / @Oda W. Andreasen (TikTok) / CBS / jj.trailwalker (Instagram) / NPR / Sebastien Despres (YouTube) About 700,000 puffin chucks were born in the Westman Islands in 2021, which marks a return to regular numbers after 20 years of declining populations. Rodrigo Martínez Catalán, a research assistant with the South Iceland Nature Research Center, told NPR the tradition has helped maintain populations of the birds, which mate for life and lay just one egg per season. Puffins can live for up to 25 years. “It’s a great feeling because you just rescued this little guy. And when you bring him to the cliff—it’s the first time in his life he’s seeing the ocean," Kyana Sue Powers told NPR. “I’m always, like, ‘Bye, buddy—have a great life; I can’t wait to see you again!” The people catching pufflings are also encouraged to log the weight of each bird on a website that helps researchers to monitor the health of the local puffin population. TikToker Jen said: “The puffling patrol tradition isn’t just great for the puffins. It also brings the community of the Westman Islands together every year, uniting people over a good cause.” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Woman disgusted after finding used boxer shorts in clothing store
A woman has shared the shocking moment she found what appeared to be used boxers on a rack in a clothing shop. Paula pops into her local warehouse sale in Vancouver, Canada, every couple of months, often picking up amazing vintage or discounted branded products for low prices. However, a recent visit on 2 September has left her stumped, with her calling the discovery “gross”. Taking to TikTok (@thisgirlpppaula), her video has gone viral – gathering over 57,000 views. “The sale was hectic as always and extremely messy with clothes everywhere,” Paula, who works in social media marketing, told NeedToKnow.co.uk. “I was really open-minded when I went because you truly never know what you’re going to find. I was in the short[s] section, going through the hangers, sliding them along and I came across a pair of shorts. “I immediately knew these didn’t belong there but I had to double-check.” Paula then took it upon herself to get rid of the dirty pair. She said: “Gross. Rather than leaving them there, I just did everyone a favour and threw them away, they didn’t belong here. I did notify a staff [member] of what I found and they thanked me for throwing it away.” Paula recorded the bizarre find and posted it to social media. “GIRL! Who’s boyfriend did this?!,” the caption read. [sic] “Someone hung their nasty crusty boxers.” The video reveals the “gross” grey boxers, before showing Paula popping them into a bin. The post has over 1,700 likes and plenty of comments from baffled users. Joey said: “That is so nice of you for taking it out of the racks, a lot of people would just leave it.” Regina commented: “I once saw someone’s Walmart-branded sweatpants on the rack.” Weenie added: “Literally I grabbed a pair of sweat shorts and they had period stains all over the inside.” Jam wrote: “Girl why did you touch it!”, to which Paula replied, “I HAD TO! Otherwise, it would still be there.” [sic] “Omg babe as someone who was working there thank u for throwing it out,” said one follower. [sic] “I swear some of the rack smell so bad, like somebody hasn't showered in decade,” added another user. “Wait wtf u take the award for 1# best samaritan,” wrote another fan. [sic] GOT Paula added: “It takes patience to find the clothing and sizes you’re looking for in items you like. “I just hope this isn’t the start of a new prank trend.” Jam Press has contacted Aritzia, the clothing warehouse that the customer visited, for comment but has not received a reply at the time of distributing this story. If you are going to pay, you may as well get something you like." @thomasbillaudeau @McDonald's Beauvais Tille Merci pour la régalade à notre mariage 😂 It comes after a McDonald's branch in Indonesia announced a wedding package for fast food lovers at under £200. Woman gets into fight with her boyfriend after throwing dog poo in neighbour's bin
A woman got into an argument with her partner after throwing their dog's poo in a neighbour's bin. The woman turned to a popular Reddit thread and explained how she had moved in with her boyfriend and his dog Maddie. Due to his working hours, she took charge of the morning walks which she "really enjoys" as it "helps her be more ready to take on the day." Her partner then takes Maddie for walks in the evenings and most weekends. Everything was running smoothly until her partner joined her for a morning walk as he didn't have work that day. "It happened when I went to throw away the poop," she explained. "As soon as I got to the can, my BF stopped me and told me I can't throw it in someone else's can and we have to carry it the entire walk until we're back home." The woman went on to say "a trash can was meant for trash," but her partner was adamant that it was wrong because it didn't belong to them. "We had to walk the rest carrying poop and it was a bit tense," she continued. "I told my boyfriend that I wasn't going to hold on to dog poop when there was a perfectly good garbage can and he said I was being rude by doing that and he was going to walk Maddie himself going forward. He said he doesn't want to risk anyone getting mad at us for using their garbage." The Reddit poster shared how she felt he was "overreacting". "Yes it is his dog so ultimately what he says goes, but it still hurts," she said. "It isn't like people would get mad at him as we do the walks separately usually." She opened up the Reddit thread for users' opinions on whether she was being unreasonable. Many of which sided with her partner. "Where I live (and in most places akin to where I live), it's illegal to put things in other people's trash receptacles. And to do that with poop is nasty. I'd be pissed as hell if someone put poop in my trash," one said. Another added: "All it takes is one ripped poop bag and you've created a really smelly problem for someone else to deal with (been there). And even that is ignoring the fact that some people in this world are dangerously territorial about their stuff." They continued: "Honestly, he has a pretty straightforward and rational argument that is tough to argue against (don't use other people's stuff without permission), and I don't see why this can't be one you just let him have." Meanwhile, a third chimed in: "Do you really need an explanation of why it's an asshole thing to do to put dog crap in another person's trash can?" Doner kebab fans stunned to learn what's in their favourite takeaway
Fans of the humble doner kebab are surprised to learn what's actually in it. Presenter Jimmy Doherty delved into the nation's favourite takeaway to find out what they actually contain. In the episode of Food Unwrapped, Doherty bought nine kebabs from different takeaways and passed them onto forensic scientist Paul Hancock to find whether any were made from lamb. Surprisingly, "most of them contain chicken," he was told. "We've also got a couple which contain beef. Fortunately, we found no goat, no donkey, and no horse in any of the products." Only one out of the nine kebabs was 100 per cent lamb. Doherty asked Hancock what results could be expected from a larger sample size, to which he responded: "I would expect to see probably around a 60 per cent failure rate. That would probably be typical." What's Really Inside A Doner Kebab? | Food Unwrapped www.youtube.com It didn't take long for viewers to flood the comments with their takes, with one concerned person writing: "Even if I could overlook the rubbish mixed in with the meat the fact that these meats are heated and cooled many many times bothers me." Another joked: "When you're staggering home at 4AM on a Saturday/Sunday morning, you don't give a f*** what's in it. If you're still capable of questioning what's in it, you're not pi**ed enough to savour it." Meanwhile, another passionate fan of the kebab humoured: "When I eat a large lamb doner kebab I have all the evidence I need that there is a God and heaven exists." Gen Z twice as likely to ditch work to attend a gig compared to millennials
Gen Z are twice as likely to spontaneously call in sick at work to attend a gig, compared to millennials. Summer 2023 was jam-packed with exciting going-ons across the country, including yet another sold-out Glastonbury, Beyonce taking over UK stadiums and Elton John's highly anticipated Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. With festival and concert season reaching its peak, it was simply too hard for Gen Z to resist. New YouGov research commissioned by viagogo found that 19 per cent said they'd put on an Oscar-worthy, tiny-violin performance to skip work at the last minute, compared to just 8 per cent of millennials. When the overall population was quizzed on what other scenarios they’d skip for five-star seats, 21 per cent of UK women cheekily admitted they’d miss the birth of a family member, whilst 17 per cent of men chose to flake on a close friend’s wedding for the gig of a lifetime. Furthermore, a staggering 43 per cent of Gen Z said they'd happily give up alcohol for half a year for their chance to be in the front row at their favourite gig. Despite soaring ticket prices due to inflation post-pandemic, 61 per cent of Gen Z participants have already seen more than 25 concerts in their lifetime. Social natives Gen Z are 10 per cent more likely than millennials to share content from live events on social media, but despite this - 84 per cent of fans insisted they put their phone down to enjoy their favourite song performed live. Reflecting on their fondest memories, the data also revealed that 21 per cent of UK gig-goers consider their first concert more memorable than losing their virginity (13 per cent), their first kiss (16 per cent) or getting their first job (20 per cent). Man lies about having cancer to raise $30,000 to enter poker competition
A man has admitted to lying about terminal cancer to raise money to enter a poker tournament. The Las Vegas World Series of Poker tournament is said to cost around $10,000, with the highest buy-in event at a staggering $250,000 for the Super High Roller. Rob Mercer from California was so desperate to take part that he set up a GoFundMe page for his fake "stage 4 colon cancer". In total, he swindled people out of thousands, which he later admitted it to the Las Vegas Review Journal. "I did lie about having colon cancer. I don’t have colon cancer. I used that to cover my situation," he said. "What I did was wrong. I shouldn’t have told people I have colon cancer. I did that just as a spur-of-the-moment thing when someone asked me what kind of cancer I had." He continued: "I’m sorry for not being honest about what my situation was. If I would have done that from day one, who knows what would have happened." A spokesperson for the crowdfunding website told the outlet that donators will be getting full refunds. "GoFundMe has zero tolerance for the misuse of our platform and takes swift action against those who exploit the generosity of our community," they said. "We have removed this fundraiser for violating our terms of service, all donors have been fully refunded, and Rob Mercer has been banned from using the platform for any future fundraisers. Additionally, GoFundMe cooperates with law enforcement investigations of those formally accused of wrongdoing." Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Watch the trailer for Blink 182 member Tom DeLonge's UFO conspiracy film
Blink-182’s Tom DeLonge has long been a vocal believer in aliens, government cover-ups around UFOs and the paranormal. Now, he has directed a feature film which deals with subject, and which gives a not-so-subtle nod to his own worldview of extraterrestrial life. The film, Monsters of California, centres around a group of high school misfits in America, who discover research left behind by a missing government agent. They embark on a “dangerous adventure to uncover a paranormal conspiracy in Southern California that brings them face-to-face with some of the government's most guarded mysteries”. It comes as UFO hysteria hit fever pitch this year, with multiple high-profile investigations into reports of potential alien activity by the US government. The first was a US Congressional hearing into unidentified anomalous phenomena which took place over the summer. The second was a NASA report into the subject, which culminated in a press conference last week, where the agency’s boss Bill Nelson admitted that he believed there were aliens somewhere in the universe. DeLonge said: "The film takes my fascination with the unexplained, combines it with the skate culture I grew up a part of, and tosses in my ridiculous sense of humour that millions got to witness during my Blink-182 days. “In recent years, I’ve had the good fortune of helping the government remember how much they care about UFOs through the work we do at To The Stars, and it's that experience which helped inspire this movie. I can't wait for audiences to see the f****d up fun adventure these kids go on.” DeLonge’s film is set for a 6 October release.
